Red Phosphorus is highly reactive to oxygen. Iodine captures electrons well. Iodine promotes Phosphorus reactivity with oxygen.
Phosphorus is normally stored in oil, which is not generally reactive with oxygen unless in the presence of a reactant (Iodine).
Once the phosphorus starts to burn, the oil will ignite. If any sulphur is present, the Iodine will react with the sulphur and when dry, create a contact explosive, which could ignite with any jostle or static electricty.
Neat trick with asbestos underwear.

I wonder... will he qualify for a Darwin award?
