Immigration Sweeps Become an Election Issue for Rep. Baca
Los Angeles Times ^ | August 2, 2004 | Hugo Martín

Posted on 08/02/2004 12:36:08 AM PDT by sarcasm

The series of sweeps by Border Patrol agents in the Inland Empire and San Diego County appear to be over, but the political fallout may last until the November election.

Rep. Joe Baca (D-San Bernardino), a staunch Latino rights advocate, jumped into the political storm by leading a protest of the sweeps — which netted more than 450 suspected illegal immigrants — and helping prompt federal officials to suspend the roundups.

Because of his activism, Baca has become a lightning rod of criticism from supporters of the sweeps and from a Southern California Border Patrol union whose members felt the congressman vilified them for detaining the suspects, according to those from both parties watching the election closely.

The controversy is expected to transform Baca's reelection bid from a likely easy win to a compelling contest focusing on immigration.

Just another liberal democratic a-hole selling out his country for some special interest group. I'm sure they love him in Mexico.

Baca means foolish or stupid in Japanese.

I am freaken tired of treating minorities with kid gloves. It is reverse discrimination to treat minorities so carefully. Just say FU if what they want and propose to do is stupid. For example, such as voting rights for non US citizens. I am a freaken minority myself, but I get tired of being treated like the mentally handicap child of the family. Let me at it, I can swing as good as anyone in the family. So F of freaken free loaders. Don't give me, "No one will work the farms?" The problem is the freaken politicians don't want to get their hands stuck in this issue. They will look bad when the news camera pans and stops on a pair of big, teary, sad eyes of an illegal immigrant child. Call me heart less. But screw you when some Radical quran toting muslim comes across the border and does another 9/11 on us. God I pray that you put some back bone and brain into these politicians. AMEN!

The most common translation that run into with baka (Baca) is idiot. Certainly fits that definition.

San Bernardino county is a fairly conservative county. Granted, that doesn't mean there are no Democratic enclaves in that country (after all, how did you get elected if there wasn't?), but, with this recent flap, and the controversy surrounding it, I wonder if it is possible for another pickup for Republicans this November. I certainly hope so at least.

There are too many of them. Silvestre Reyes (RAT TX) and Raul Grijalva (RAT AZ) are two from our my area of the country.

Thank you for the ping NRT.

I have a feeling Joe Hadenuf will be silent on this or actually consider this bad news, since Joe only criticizes Pubbies.

el supremo don Raoul Grijalva de Me.Ch.A Azatlan, is in a district that was drawn up so that no one but he, or someone like him can win.

When the new districts were being drawn up by the appointed, independant committee, some of us objected to their proposal, the chairman of the committee said, they had to draw the district so minoritys would be represented, when he was told, whith his plan we would not be represented, he said "you don't count."

You beat me to posting this. I was absolute stunned when I read this.

Baca and his staff have downplayed the controversy, saying it has caused little, if any, long-term political damage. "The issue has been resolved," said Baca, a former state legislator first elected to Congress in 1999 after the death of Rep. George E. Brown Jr. "The only remaining controversy is from people that are angry that the sweeps have stopped."

No kidding Joe. Thanks for showing what a pompous, elitist, representative for Vicente Fox you are for all in San Bernadino, Rialto etc to see. I think I'll actually go through with throwin a few bucks Ed Laning's way for that brazen comment.

Rep. Joe Baca (D-CA) is shown here on March 28 proposing a national holiday to honor Marxist agitator Cesar Chavez.

Which is actually quite ironic --- Cesar Chavez never did believe in open borders or unlimited immigration which was being done then for the same reason it is now --- to keep the wages of the farmworkers incredibly low. Cesar Chavez and the UFW actually went to the border to help stop illegals from coming over, because they were trying to get wages up not down.

Thank you for the ping NRT.

NRT was making fun of you Dane. I can't believe you don't understand what a complete joke you are here on FR. I went to that FR Reagan event on Sat at the Reagan library and met Jim Rob, many of the SoCal FReepers (who actually know about illegal immigration) Mods etc-----you are an absolute characture. Everyone was laughing at your Baca obsession. I couldn't believe how many people who didn't post on that thread read it.

I have a feeling Joe Hadenuf will be silent on this or actually consider this bad news, since Joe only criticizes Pubbies.

What's also funny is that you are silent on criticizing D-Joe Baca yourself. All this bluster, but you really only criticize FReepers and accuse them of conspiracies to side with D-Joe Baca, but what about what he said? I asked you before, have you given money to Ed Laning?

Course not, but I bet you were excited about a new pic of Joe on this thread.

Yawn, I could really care less, if true, and knowing your rhetoric, I highly doubt your veracity.
