Two Blasts Hit Separate Churches in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq

Two car bombs exploded just minutes apart outside two nearby churches in central Baghdad during Sunday evening services, injuring at least 20 people, witnesses said.

The attacks appeared to be the first targeting churches during the 15-month violent insurgency.

U.S. military officials said at least one and possible both of the blasts appeared to have been booby-trapped cars in the city's Karada neighborhood.

U.S. soldiers and Iraqi police patrolled the area as emergency workers raced to evacuate the wounded.

The first blast hit outside an Armenian church just 15 minutes into the evening service, witnesses said. The second blast hit a Catholic church about 200 yards away.

"I saw injured women and children and men, the church's glass shattered everywhere. There's glass all over the floor," said Juliette Agob, who was inside the Armenian church during the first explosion.

Massive plumes of black smoke poured into the evening sky over the city as firefighters struggled to put out the flames. U.S. helicopter gunships circled above the scene.

Firefighters and residents struggled with water hoses to put out the flames, which leapt from the front of a tan colored church and several blackened, destroyed cars.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Two car bombs targeted Christian churches in Baghdad on Sunday, exploding about 45 minutes apart, according to Iraqi police.

Casualty figures were not immediately available.

The blasts occurred in the Karada district of central Baghdad, a middle-class neighborhood that houses several Christian churches and Iraq's national theater. At one church, a bomb detonated during a worship service, forcing worshippers to flee the building.

Police said a third Baghdad church was targeted, but no details were immediately available.

Karada is about a mile (1.4 km) east of the Green Zone, the fortified central Baghdad district that houses government offices and the U.S. Embassy.

Police and emergency workers responding to the first blast discovered a second car they suspected had been rigged as a bomb. The explosives in that vehicle detonated before it could be disarmed, police said.

The attacks followed a roadside bombing Sunday in Baghdad that killed two Iraqi civilians and wounded two others.

Also Sunday, a suicide car bomb in the northern city of Mosul killed at least four Iraqis -- including two police officers. The car bomb wounded 32 others when it exploded outside the Sumer police station in a Palestinian neighborhood, according to U.S. and Iraqi officials.

The violence comes just days after at least 70 people were killed in Baquba when a suicide bomber drove a mini-bus into a marketplace near a police station.

On Saturday, a group linked to terrorist mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi announced it has kidnapped two drivers working for a Turkish company supplying goods to U.S. forces in Iraq.

In a videotape broadcast on the Arabic-language Al-Jazeera network, the Unification and Jihad group said the company must stop its activities in Iraq within 48 hours or the militants will behead the two.

CNN Turk identified the hostages as Abdulrahman Demir and Sait Enver. They work for a Turkey-based company called Karamanli.

CNN has not independently verified the report.

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has acknowledged the rash of kidnappings throughout Iraq could deter countries from participating in Iraq's reconstruction and security.

Powell made an unannounced visit to Iraq on Friday, arriving in Baghdad after stopping in Saudi Arabia, which has suggested a plan to send Muslim troops to Iraq. ()

On Thursday, Al-Jazeera reported that a Somali truck driver had been kidnapped by Unification and Jihad.

The network reported the man works for a Kuwaiti company, which also was given a 48-hour ultimatum. There is no word on the fate of the Somali.

The group has taken responsibility for beheading U.S. businessman Nicholas Berg, South Korean translator Kim Sun-il and two Bulgarian truckers.

Another Turkish truck driver seized earlier in the month in Mosul has been freed, CNN Turk reported Saturday.

I think that the terrorists are actively trying to persuade us that this is a religious war to turn the christians against the peaceful muslims, thereby forcing said peaceful muslims to choose to join the terrorists. This is the sort of tactic Charles Manson took, though it backfired on him. I'm hoping that this backfires on the terrorists with the peaceful muslims opting to rid the world of the terrorists. And yes, I think that there are peaceful muslims who abhor what the terrorists are doing.

Very good post. The cvilian population of Baghdad is being attacked on two fronts. First, by crazed terrorists, who want to promote ethnic/civil war (the Charles Manson types); secondly, by common criminals, for whom kidhapping/carjacking/robbery are very good ways of making a living.

Officials Fear Terrorists Could Try to Enter U.S. Through Mexico

I have been posting on other threads about the documentary I watched at least two months ago.  It was along the Arizona or New Mexico border.  They interviewed a border patrol and his wife who live on this side of the border.

The said THOUSANDS are coming across the border every NIGHT!  And they are NOT Mexican's.  The woman said that they find the prayer rugs and books of the Kharan in their yard on a daily basis.

This is the last I have heard about this.  Now..........Officials FEAR? Terrorists Could? try to enter U.S. BORDERS?  They must not want to create mass panic, because folks, this has been happening for months!

CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) spokesman Ibrahim Hooper indicated in a 1993 interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune that he wants to see the United States become a Muslim country.

Before Americans start pitying the poor Brits (who truly deserve a good bashing from Islam), they should checked their own  neighborhoods!  Besides Louis Farrakan's Nation of Islam, the Black Panther and New Black Panther Parties with all their black wanna-be Muslims, there are also REAL Muslims and their communities are springing up everywhere. In 1970 there were an estimated one-hundred thousand Muslims in the United States. Today, a mere 34 years later, the number is approximately 7-10 million! More than a quarter of a million people of Arab descent live in southeastern Michigan, making the area the second-largest Arab community outside the Middle East (after Paris, France). One frightening example of their prolific growth in American is Dearborn, Michigan. Of a total population of 90,000 Dearborn residents, 25,000 are now Arabs!  And of all the Dearborn children under the age of 18, a full 58% are Arab children! Other developing centers of Arab/Muslim growth are Florida, Texas, New Jersey and California. God Bless America!

Every year huge numbers of Arabs/Muslims from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Kuwaitis, Syria, Egypt, Albania and dozens of other ethnic Muslim states who hate America swarm into the United States and add to the already increasing numbers of Arab/Muslim. And every year hundreds of mosques, which preach the extermination of all non-Muslims and the Islamization of America, are being added to the thousands already pointing their minarets skyward. The vast majority (80%) of American mosques are funded with Saudi Arabian money and most subscribe to 18th century Wahhabism that calls for the spread of Islam through violence. Many mosques, "Islamic Learning Centers" and Arab/Muslim Student Unions are distributing large numbers of pamphlets and leaflets attacking Judaism, Christianity and other non-Muslim religions and urging young Americans (esp. angry black Americans) to convert to Islam! Not surprisingly, a large number of African-Americans convert to Islam while in the prison systems! The National Islamic Prison Foundation, which coordinates a campaign to convert inmates to Islam claim an average of 135,000 such conversions per year. And if thousands of self-hating, Leftwing Jews hadn't already converted to Buddhism, they too might be targeted!

The nerve of these evil people to exploit the freedoms given to them here in America and other democracies when their goal is to extinguish ALL freedom!  

Many Arabs in America are a disloyal fifth column. They work relentlessly to undermine the U.S. struggle to survive in the face of the growing Muslim terrorist threat. The huge Muslim birthrate, Muslim immigration, the massive expansion of Muslim religious and educational institutions that convert Christians to Islam and the purchase of major U.S. companies by Muslim oil sheiks are all also part of their strategy. America's great friend (???), Saudi Arabia, from whose land came fifteen of the nineteen September 11th Arab hijackers (who flattened the World Trade Center, a portion of the Pentagon and made a very big hole in a Pennsylvania field), has for some time been spear-heading the spread of Islamic doctrine. The Saudis have wholly or partly financed some 210 Islamic Centers (check out this one in Boca Raton, Florida!!!), more than 1,500 mosques and 202 colleges and almost 2,000 schools for educating Muslim children in non-Islamic countries in Europe, Asia, South America, Canada, Australia and America. Check out the mosque near you and look for Islamic propagandists exalting the virtues of Islam to appear soon in YOUR kid's school. Speaking of schools, watch them try to infuse Islam and Islamic rights INTO school systems! Did you know that some Islamic schools in America are teaching hatred toward American Jews and Christians? And what about regular North American colleges and universities? Check out one of the so-called "social activities" of the M.S.A. (Muslim Student Association)! And don't forget to pick up the U.S. Postal Service's new 34 cent Eid-il-Mubarak stamp!
