Dem ticket doesn't wow Marines at Wendy's Saturday, July 31, 2004
7:30 a.m. EST Friday - At a rally before the 3,500-mile campaign bus tour leaves Boston, Sen. John F. Kerry [related, bio] drapes an arm over Mayor Thomas M. Menino's shoulder as they exchange post-convention compliments.
The rift between the two seems mended - at least in front of the cameras.
10:30 a.m. - The tour consists of 10 buses - half for the candidates, their families and aides, and half for media - along with four minivans, a lead car, a vehicle for TV camera crews and a truck carrying the gear that provides wireless Internet access. That doesn't count the Secret Service or state troopers. Rolling down 84 West, the highway is closed in one direction while Kerry's motorcade comes through. Some motorists seem angry at the delay, but Kerry supporters line up along the route with signs.
12:30 p.m. - Since it's the Edwards' 27th wedding anniversary, the candidates stop for lunch where the couple celebrates each year, at Wendy's. Edwards and Kerry greet a table of Marines, who answered their questions in monosyllables.
Later, the Marines tell reporters they support Bush. ``(Kerry) imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here shaking our hands,'' one said.
4 p.m. - Supporters gathered for an outdoor rally in sweltering Scranton, Pa., wait for the bus tour - which arrives an hour and a half late. An onlooker collapses from heat and Vanessa Kerry, a third-year medical student, rushes to give medical assistance.

Looks as if that Marine is doing his best not to cold-cock the Senator. All the Marines I have known would have tore off that finger. Way to keep your bearing troop!

That marine has guts!
Indeed. I hope he doesn't get into trouble for talking about his political views while in uniform. I know that can be a problem sometimes.
For his own well-being he probably should have just complained about the rude imposition by Kerry and let his own political support remain obvious but unsaid.
Kerry really put these Marines in a bad position and used them as unwilling campaign props. Hope they don't suffer because of it.

Media Schadenfreude and Media Shenanigans PING This was not always revealed in the articles about Kerry's latest photo op.
Later, the Marines tell reporters they support Bush. ``(Kerry) imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here shaking our hands,'' one said.

No chance of those Marines receiving NJP. Kerry tried to pimp them. He failed.

I also like the 'stripes' vs the young ROTC officer type dynamic that is subtly in play in the picture.
Kerry is just the type of green young officer that gets no respect from the guys who have seen action. The sentiment, of course, is if we follow this buffon, he's going to get us all killed. I always got a laugh out of that.
Leave it to the Dems to take a green junior officer's 4 months in Vietnam and collectively pretend he is a combo of Sgt York and Audie Murphy.

Man, that is a REALLY aggresive stance that Kerry has. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY is allowed to get in my face like that and put their finger on me. REALLY bad! Threatening.

You can tell by the look on the Marines faces that they are thinkg: "Bug off, you big turd of a traitor. We only get a half hour lunch, none of which we want to spend talking to you!"

Look at it closely, I don't think that's his finger. It looks like he's trying to palm off some of his campaign stuff (looks like a card of some type) and the Marine is not making a move to take it. As a matter of fact, you can see the young Marine reflexively starting to clench his fists as he controls his anger.

Reporters are supposed to get the names (and even a release) from people when they take their photos. I would have given my name as "Bush Voter". Force the media to tell the truth.

I would think they would be in trouble since Kerry is not the CIC

The Democrats ignored Bush41 and Bob Dole's combat experience in preference of Bill Clinton's loathing of the military and anti-war protesting.
Kerry was a traitor (Benedict Arnold was also a hero to both sides of a war).
