Gillette disposes of common sense (DNC close shave alert!)

Having become the world's most popular razor since its 1998 debut, the Gillette Mach 3 obviously provides a superior shaving experience.

Featuring three independently suspended blades, the razor was designed to provide closer shaves with less irritation than its competitors. Yet the Mach 3 caused plenty of irritation this week at the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

The razors were included in about 30,000 gift bags distributed to delegates, dignitaries and the media. The bags also contained such convention essentials as subway maps, dried cranberry snacks and donkey-shaped macaroni and cheese.

Problems arose when a number of people attempted to take their bags into the FleetCenter.

I'm afraid I don't understand why those kinds of razor blades were considered contraband. This country has gone completely insane.

What, no righteous indignation at the razor company for giving razors to people who don't shave? What about the right of Muslims not to be offended by free gifts? What about the women delegates possibly being offended at the inference that they, too, need to shave? What about the aging hippy girlie-men who haven't shaved since they burned their draft cards in the '60's?

But I do think the little mac'n cheese donkeys could be downright cute! Especially if they were properly accessorized with teensy meadow muffins made of raisins. Adorable!

According to the speeches last night we are overreacting to this threat, what with the opposition to the Patriot Act and all, so what's the big deal.

This reminds me of the TV commercials from back in the 70's when the two-blade razors started becoming popular. They created animations demonstrating that the first blade would pull the hair out a little and cut off the end. Then the second blade came along and cut it off flush with the skin.

Then, Saturday Night Live did a parody of a three-bladed razor. They included similar animations with similar lengthy explanations on what each blade does to the point of absurdity. I guess life does imitate art.

We use those razors. The blades are really friggin expensive! I would've liked to be there collecting all those that were disposed. Such a waste!
