Maryland Throphy Bear Hunt
http://www.MarylandBears.com ^

Posted on 07/25/2004 10:11:43 AM PDT by sussie

Maryland legislature has approved a trophy bear hunt in Alleghy County Maryland in October. The request for a Bear Hunt was promoted by hunters. There are only 300 bears in Maryland. This is an indicriminate killing of bears for 'sport', not the killing or problem bears. There is no provision cubs left orphaned by the killing. Bears are basically shy and avoid humans unless humans move into bear country and leave food out to attract bears. As was done in Yellostone, bears can be trained to stay away from Human food. Please CALL GOV EHRLICH now at 1-800-811-8336 to state your opposition to Bear Hunt and ask him to veto the Bear Hunt What is left of the animals in America should be preserved, not destroyed. While American groups promote the saving of species in other countries, we are killing our own Animals. Maryland should set up a preserve for bears, deer and other animals.

Ok. The thing is that much of what is classified as "Sport" hunting is actually vermin control.

I know a number of deer hunters who hunt for "sport" in that they do not eat their kill but donate the meat to food pantries. As some are given tags to kill a deer a day there is no possible way that they can eat all of that.

There are very few so called "sport" hunts where the animal is either not eventually eaten or where it is a form of pest control.

Excellent list. But may we all note the variety of bear species. They are not all equally aggressive. Although it is not a teddy bear, the black bear is the least threatening. In its natural environment a black bear *is* shy and tends to flee, if not ignore, humans.

That being said, the areas where black bears are becoming 'problems' are no longer the bears' natural environment and therefore the population must be managed. Better to shoot a few than to let the larger population starve or become hated or feared for the damage they do as nuisances.

I kill bugs, too, without pangs of conscience

I feel guilty when I kill spiders - because they eat bugs. Anything that kills mosquitos is my friend.

You eat bear meat? I was under the impression that it was not good to eat. As of 15/20 years ago in Canada, a bear was the only animal you could legally leave in the woods after you skinned it. Bears are omnivores, they eat carrion. Ick!

I'm with ya. A few months ago, I saw a palmetto bug (and don't tell me they aren't cockroaches!) on my carport wall that was as long as my finger. Since it was too high to swat, I seriously considered getting one on my target airguns and splattering the thing. Still wish I'd done it.

(I don't know if the roach was actually a liberal, but that's where the smart money is.)

LOL So I have heard.

I have been on many bear hunts with my husband & I have been told that the only time you eat bear meat is to keep from starving to death. A bears favorite meal is a rotten beaver.

For many, in this modern and soft culture, a vital part of hunting is the unique set of emotions and motives and reactions knit inextricably with killing a large warm blooded animal in cold blood.

Killing, either in hunting for food or other product (leather, etc) or in husbandry or in mercy, INVARIABLY makes me feel very peculiarly awful - in all senses of that word.

In discussing this with other hunters, cattlemen, and mercy-killers, I have found that this emotional reaction is actually the rule rather than the exception.

It is not a set of feelings I enjoy or wish to experience.

Yet, on the other hand, I stongly believe that it is of vital importance - for the sanity of a culture and for that culture's survival in a world that is not uniformly soft and cuddly - for a large percentage of that culture's population to be able to force themselves to set passion aside and force themselves to commit this particular act.

In this world, one must be able to govern one's self, and kill without hesitance or excitement in the act, enduring the ride which comes with it.

To be otherwise is to be a slave to one's feelings, and a prey-animal to harder, fiercer elements of reality.

Any thoughts?

while living in New Orleans, I would often use my Crossman 3357 .177cal. air gun on those flying monstrosities.

Yes, I am aware of that... I did address the vermin-control motive above, under self-defense and population control. I think that's valid.

I think there are plenty of situations where there are good reasons to commit this particular act; enough so that the act need not occur in the absence of those good reasons. Yes, we need people who can set aside their emotions and kill when necessary - but we do not need people who set aside their emotions and kill when not necessary - that is sociopathic behavior. Those pangs of conscience are a necessary component of understanding the meaning of the act, not a troublesome side effect to be done away with.

If we are going to indulge people who kill for pleasure, let them shoot jihadis.

I disagree with the assertion that there's nothing wrong with hunting animals for sport ...

I have no problem with you disagreeing with me. You have my permission not to hunt for sport. Personally, I eat what I kill when I hunt. I certainly don't hunt because I can't afford to go the the grocery store. In fact, most hunters can afford to go the grocery store and buy meat packaged in stryofoam and plastic wrap. I hunt for sport and food. Since I can afford food, it is mostly for sport.

I have no problem saying that I enjoy hunting and I won't lie like many other people that say they don't hunt for sport. Political correctness is completely out of control when people can't be honest with themselves and use words that accurately describe what they do. I hunt animals. When I am successful, I kill animals. And yes, I eat animals.

Man has been doing this since man has existed. Man has also been making choices about what he eats since man has existed. Given the choice of eating meat even when there is an abundance of other food, man has and will continue to choose meat.

To me there is no difference between killing a domesticated animal or a wild animal. However, there is a difference in taste. There is a signficant difference in taste between deer and cow, and even a bigger difference between deer and lentils. So when I hear bunch of lentil eating, eco-wacko socialists make an arguement about sport and non-sport killing of animals I realize that their arguments are not valid.

What these animal rights advocates really want is to control my activites. First they want to eliminate my right to hunt. They will use any line of illogic to convince people that hunting is wrong. If they are successful in eliminating hunting then the next attack will be on gun ownership. Their lack of logic is, if you can't hunt there is no reason to own a firearm and thus people should not have the right to own guns. Of course they don't understand the 2nd Amendment. It has nothing to do with hunting. By the way, I own guns to kill humans as well, but have no desire to kill humans.

I should say that I have a personal problem with people that are wasteful. It is wasteful to hunt and not eat what you kill. There is a very small mirority of hunters that do that. Even so, I don't think that I have the right to stop others from being wasteful. Because no one has the right to tell people not be wasteful. If they did have the right to tell others not to be wasteful we would be forced to drive Yugos or Geo Metros instead of SUVs and other gas guzzling cars. When the day comes and I am forced to drive a Yugo instead of SUV I want to have my human killing guns around.
