Maryland legislature has approved a trophy bear hunt in Alleghy County Maryland in October. The request for a Bear Hunt was promoted by hunters. There are only 300 bears in Maryland. This is an indicriminate killing of bears for 'sport', not the killing or problem bears. There is no provision cubs left orphaned by the killing. Bears are basically shy and avoid humans unless humans move into bear country and leave food out to attract bears. As was done in Yellostone, bears can be trained to stay away from Human food. Please CALL GOV EHRLICH now at 1-800-811-8336 to state your opposition to Bear Hunt and ask him to veto the Bear Hunt What is left of the animals in America should be preserved, not destroyed. While American groups promote the saving of species in other countries, we are killing our own Animals. Maryland should set up a preserve for bears, deer and other animals.
"a bunch of socialist wackos more concerned about animals than they are people."
Actually I must disagree. These people dont give a damn about animals, that's just their front. They would rather see entire populations of animals starve from overpopulation due to their laws based on bogus science rather than allow a person to enjoy the freedom, independence and link to our heritage that hunting provides. The point here is to destroy those things, the animals are just the vehicle.
There has been a bear population explosion the last 7 or 8 years all over the country. Bear that cannot find territory in the wild are pushing down into residential areas.
It doesn't make any difference where the bear are killed, it will create open territories for the others to move into and keep them out of your kid's playground.

The county I grew up in, Allegany. (My birth got recorded in WV because that's where the hospital was, but I grew up in Western MD.) It's spelled as I just did and not as you did. ;)
Also, it's different from the Allegheny River (and county) in PA. (And the former name of USAir.) Allegany versus Allegheny.
Nope, you aren't wrong at all.
Sussie is a troll.
Maintaining the position of Homo sapiens as the top predator on the planet is the most conservative position of all.

I am willing to pick up a gun and go hunt for the defense of my fellow man, or if the need to feed compels it, or even if it's for the good of the overall animal population that I would be hunting. In the absence of being able to do so firsthand I would be willing to provide resources to my neighbor who acted in my stead.
For sport alone, I would not. Life is too precious to end it for the purpose of pleasure.
Phooey! It's no fun if they don't fight back!
Sure. I don't disagree that hunting can be a positive and spiritual experience for the hunter. But divorced from a "need" motive, it no longer works for the integration of one's humanity, but instead divorces the killing instinct from good reasons to kill.
If pleasure alone is the goal, then there is ample sport that does not end life that can satisfy it.
Oh, but sussie declared that spelling doesn't matter.........tch, tch, tch.
Vermin control is self-defense. The Black Death demonstrated that pretty conclusively. Thus, I have no problem with it whatsoever. I kill bugs, too, without pangs of conscience, and if the threat to humans was as big and complex a form of life as a bear, it would make no difference to me. It is the human motive that matters.
I cooked a bear roast the other day, it tasted just like prime rib! Get over it sussie, modern wildlife management is something you should study before going off all emotional on us.
On the other hand, it could be Bush's fault.
My argument is that life is always more complex than that, with the exception of stone sociopaths, of course.
Let's not indicriminately condem all bad spelers, now.
