I am a Penn State alumn and I LOVE Joe Pa.
I didn't know he was a Republican until Bush 41 came to our campus in 92. It just cemented the adoration and respect I have for Paterno.
He's a class act in everything he does. Even his politics.
I tried looking for a download of the early July Bush rally in York, PA where Joe Paterno introduced the president but I couldn't find it anywhere. Went to C-SPAN and they have it to buy but I didn't want to pay $30.
Pa-ping
I hang out with a good republican buddy who loves Bush but not PSU. I think I'll print out that picture and frame it.
Beats an endorsement by Whoopi Goldberg, doesn't it?
Jo Pa can do no wrong at PSU. A picture (that is) worth a thousand votes.
I have pictures from that very day (I was an Asst. Prof. of Mil. Sci. at PSU at that time). Have pictures of 41, Joe Pa and the Lion, each at the podium with the presidential seal. I will look for them tomorrow and post them on this thread.
Is there such a thing as a liberal football guy?
Another Penn Stater here who loves Joe. All the more with the fact that over the past 15 years or so he has become more publicly active for the GOP (remember he spoke at one of the conventions.) And of course his son won the GOP Congressional primary for that district last spring. For the glory!!!
Me too! I'd love to see Joe Paterno replace Graham Spanier as PSU president if he ever retires as coach.
Penn State deserves a strong, decent, hardnose conservative as president. The student body is overwhelmingly conservative, but we are presently subjected to a weak liberal administration whose primary emphasis is not on education, but on diversity and multiculturalism.
"Is there such a thing as a liberal football guy?"
Maybe at some wuss school like Swarthmore or Amherst, but that would be it. To the extent that they have any politics at all, it seems like the overwhelming majority of those involved in athletics tend to be Conservative. This is probably because sports are competitive and the idea is to WIN, not to share an experience with your opponent. One of the few high-profile liberal coaches I can think of is former North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith.

Oh, THAT W...nevermind
Vice President Dick Cheney, left, is presented with a Penn State football game jersey signed by Penn State's Head football coach Joe Paterno, not pictured, and his son Republican congressional candidate Scott Paterno, right, after Cheney's speech, Monday, July 12, 2004, in Harrisburg, Pa.
Didn't know about this.
For some reason I can't get the link to work. As soon as I click on the Road To Whitehouse link I get an error page can't be found and some weird search engine page comes up. I will keep trying.
