I know it is late afternoon on Friday for me to get a good response to this posting, however, I am constantly thinking that the US government should come clean, and admit that they lied to us about the shoulder to air missile that hit the TWA flight 800 in the NYC harbor.
I do appreciate that they lied to protect the flying public from panicking, however, after 9/11, and after the wall to wall public education regarding fanatic Islam, it would not be harmful to day to admit the truth.
Please let me know your views?

I've read about them. I've read a lot of them. According the eyewitnesses the missile came from the sea, except for those who claim it caim from the shore. Some have it heading east, some west, some south, some north. Some say it was red, some white, some pink or yellow. I've served on DDG and FFG ships in the Navy. I participated in several missile shoots, two at night. And none of those description come close to matching what a Navy Standard surface to air missile looks like. And the Standard was the only missile on any of the ships in the area.
There is no uniformity in the witness accounts. That's one of the problems. But assume for a moment that this is accurate. There were no reports of a navy ship that close to shore. If there had been then the launch, including the flash and smoke, could have been seen from shore. And nobody has admitted to that.
Well having served in lean times and in good, I can't remember a single instance of target practice without a target when something as expensive as a Standard missile was concerned. They run over $440,000 each.
That would be the same Admiral Moorer who was involved in the CNN Tailwind report later that same year, and claimed that Sarin nerve gas was used by the U.S. in Laos against American defectors? I believe that was later discredited, wasn't it?
I don't know that the Navy shot down TWA800. IMO the investigation was so totally FU'd that there is no telling who did it, not now. But I do know there were several conflicting stories about where the Navy was when it happened.

If you ever spent any time at JFK, outside the airport, you would know that at sunset (the time of the incident) there are many different vistas, vantages and colors in the smog of NY, creating totally different views, depenting on which direction you are looking.
I have seen too many missiles take off (I grew up at Cape Canaveral), to disregard reports because of the variation in shape/color of the the trail. It changes radically with angle, distance, and time - even a few seconds - depending upon the winds aloft.
PS - I have also seen a lot explode. My brother was so startled, he fell of his firetruck perch when the Challenger exploded.
The forward illume lights lights give off lots of heat when operating.

No, and I've never touched one of the four engines of a 747, either, but I would still bet that the heat signature from one of those exceeds that of the illumination lights. Are you suggesting otherwise?
From underneath, the heat source that would be 'better seen' by a seeker head would be the forward illume lights.
Especially if the aircraft is flying towards the launcher.
The heat source from the engines would be behind the engines and unseen/occluded/masked from the seeker head's point of view.
Those lights get darned hot.
The FIM-92C stinger will also see ultraviolet light.
This is part of anti-spoofing tech that's supposed to keep it from chasing a flare rather than the target aircraft.
So, say for example, the target is a MiG-29, the seeker head can 'see' the UV glint off the windscreen.
Mind you, this is all speculation still.
We really don't know what happened.
All we know is that the plane lost it's nose as if it was either blown off or shot off.
Definately the center wing tank didn't go up the way the NTSB claimed it did.
So it could have been a freaky foot bomber, rigged luggage(unlikely but one never knows), sabotage, or a shoulder launched lucky shot.
Well no kidding. Based on you extensive experience?
