The latest Arbitron radio ratings showed Rush Limbaugh beating both Al Franken and Bill OReilly in New York City with OReillys audience slightly larger than Frankens in the one hour they go head-to-head, 2-3pm. The Reuters headline, as posted by Yahoo: Al Franken Beats O'Reilly in NY Radio Matchup. The July 21 Washington Post slapped this headline over the same Reuters dispatch which focused on the 25-54 year-old age bracket: Franken Trumps OReilly in N.Y.C. Ratings.
An excerpt from the July 20 article by Steve Gorman in Los Angeles:
Despite the rocky start of his liberal Air America radio network, political humorist Al Franken surged past conservative nemesis Bill O'Reilly in the first quarterly ratings matchup between the two in New York City.
But before liberals can claim a victory in the battle for ears of listeners in America's biggest city, consider this: Veteran conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh beat them both.
"The Al Franken Show," airing weekdays on WLIB-AM, more than doubled O'Reilly's "The Radio Factor" on WOR-AM among listeners aged 25 to 54 -- the group advertisers prize most -- during the only hour when the two go head to head in New York, Arbitron Inc. reported on Tuesday.
According to its April-to-June survey, the first since Air America's debut, Franken posted a 2.6 share from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., compared with a 1.1 share for O'Reilly in the 25-54 demographic.
An Arbitron share is an average quarter-hour measure of listenership that combines audience size with the amount of time people are tuned in.
O'Reilly did slightly better than Franken in the broader demographic of all listeners aged 12 and up. But they were each eclipsed by Limbaugh in both demographics....
With a new group of executives in charge and investors committing more capital, [Air America] network insiders have said the venture is bouncing back. Air America now claims 17 stations nationwide, plus a presence on the XM and Sirius satellite radio networks.

O'Reilly is NOT a conservative.
I would agree with that contention too i.e. global warming, gun control, says Kerry is a classic liberal (most liberal voting record in the Senate/Dukakis ultra-lib), and so on. He does however allow a voice to people like Stephen Hayes on his book the connection and he does takes on the ACLU and the N.Y. Times. Defintely pluses.
I agree. He is a contrarian/wanna be moralist.
He's no conservative.
Copy editor responsible for headline should be brought to account. Washington Post National editor Michael Abramowitz comment address: abramowitz@washingtonpost.com
Yes, we should email him and demand an apology or at least a correction. Too much to hope for I suppose.
Of course...like taking on Internet Porn, but doing an interview with a porn star. He's also afraid to condemn homosexuality...
are not people between the ages of 25-54, aged 12 and up? this looks like a really thin sliver for franken.
Conclusion--Conservatism is honest.
I bet O'Reilly will vote for GWB too.
Dam$! They totally tricked me. I skimmed this article yesterday (not much time to invest in Stewart Franken) and reached the same flawed conclusion that the headline hopes you will reach. That's why I need my daily treatment of Free Republic.
Bill O'Reilly's Ideological Background...

Make your own calls. As for me? He rocks.
The left can keep trying to prop up Franken. But his show won't last beyond the elections this year. Nobody is interested in his views.
The only interest is to bash Fox, bash the Fox on air talent. Thats what this Reuter's story was really about. Franken is just the tool for this specific job (Bashing Fox).
Right...he's a populist (just lookin' out fer the folks) but he's certainly not a conservative.
I heard that Frankenstein's ratings in NYC were big for the first month or so but since then have declined to a point where they almost immeasurable.
Were they the only participants in the pole?
I call him an o'reillyist. Meaning he believes in whatever he thinks will elevate bill o'reilly at that particular moment.
He's basically a blowhard who knows jack squat but makes up for it by yelling over anyone who disagrees with him.
O'Reilly is a 'conservative' to the rest of the media because the media is so far left, anyone towards the center, like O'Reilly, is 'right wing'.
We, in the true 'right wing', see O'Reilly to our left on many issue, and thus dispute the 'conservative' tag because we are the conservatives.
The liberals pull the same garbage by always trying to label us Nazis, when Nazi really means National Socialist, ie, the left.
