I haven't watched CBS News in 15 years, but happened to catch a clip of Dan Rather's announcement of the Berger resignation, and was shocked at the undisguised partisanship of Mr. Rather. He stated that the Berger resignation was prompted by a "carefully orchestrated" set of manuevers, in effect blaming Republicans, while not even mentioning the fact that Mr. Berger was caught stealing documents from the National Archives.
It's pathetic that CBS has been reduced to this low level. I can't find the transcript on the internet. Does anyone have it?
Suspicuous timing.
many thanks for the link
It's my opininon that Berger was performing a CYA manuver for his own legacy as well as that of Bill Clinton. For the "party" he swore that Clinton/Berger were "on it" with regards to international terrorist threats from Al Qaida. They wanted to contrast this with President Bush saying that he refused to follow their "leads".
Looking over the missed opportunities to prevent 9/11, they fall in the Clinton Administration's time (and the machine should have been up to speed by the final years of an 8 year administration).
Are you going to complain? I just did.

I don't watch Rather on CBS. A much better spot for news is Daly on the Comedy Channel.
Danny will be 73 this October. Rather and his audience are fading fast before the inexorable tick-tick-tick of the actuary's tables.
Your signup date here says you're not a newbie, so what's the problem again?

The problem is that I would have expected him to disguise it. That's what Goldberg's book says they do.
Berger and his lawyers have been aware of this investigation for some time as has, apparently been Bill Clinton. They have always been able to control the timing. Did they think this wouldn't come out? Why not get out with your side early and on your terms? Sloppy. A good word and one that accurately describes Berger/Clinton foreign policy. More amazing still is that the FBI was investigating and nearly every Archives employee must have known about this for six months and this is leaked to AP? Where has the Washington Post been? They never would have missed this story if Bob Woodward was still alive.
Rather's Right-wing Orchestra
from tonight's show. Here's the info from Rather's show, including the intro from Ratherbiased.com
If this story gets legs, I don't think Kerrys legal challenges will have anything to do with elections. I think he will have more series legal problems.
The only argument Berger can have is the timing. The only problem Kerry has is the timing. Timing and politics go hand in hand. This isn't the YMCA "everyone wins" concept. Berger is a thief, got caught, worked for Clinton and Kerry, what does Berger expect? It's about time the Republicans got the gloves off, if they did leak this. Good for them! Republicans have been getting hit left and right with the propaganda stick by the libs while not fighting back. Now the libs start crying when they get hit with the truth stick.
I went to cbs.com today just to see how SeeBS handled the Berger incident. It was absolutely pathetic. I wish I had a better word b/c "pathetic" doesn't even begin to describe it. It was: "Republicans accuse Sandy Berger....Democrats and even Republicans question the timing of the leak..... The Justice Department says criminal charges will probably not be filed." Gag me!!
I'm paraphrasing but believe me it was terrible. And then when Reagan passes he closes the show with a quivering lip. Either I just don't get the guy or he is every bit as good of an actor as XXX42 (which ain't that great if you asked me).
Phew. There's about 200 years worth of lies and distortions on the hoof.
He was no doubt troubled by the Reagan death because he thought it would help Bush.
Timing...
The Dems are mad because the Bushies timed the Berger leak for partisan purposes to draw attention from the partisan-motivated 911 Report the Dems had engineered.
My letter of complaint to CBS:
Again, I am amazed with CBS and Dan Rather's blatant partisan reporting, specifically the coverage of Sandy Berger and his theft or mishandling of sensitive documents. Dan Rather seems to think the leak is more significant than the "crime." So let's review that issue alone. Those documents are owned by and paid for by the American people. They are "our" papers and "we" have entrusted them to "our" government. There are rules that govern those documents established by "we" the people," through "our" elected officials. "We" have a right to know if they are mishandled for whatever reason and it is not up to you the "media" to determine what "we" know and when "we" know it. Because of our constitution "we" the people also gave you the freedom to provide us with factual information, not innuendo, not personal subjection and certainly not bias. You have failed miserably and since you chose to not inform "us" who gave you this right, "we" must learn through leaks and I for one am grateful because if it were not for leaks "we" would be deaf, dumb and blind.
I'd Rather not watch it either.
