~ CANTEEN FIELD TRIP ~
Welcome to the FR Canteen's Thursday Field Trip!!
Ma decided that we needed to do something fun. She gave us a difficult, but interesting task. Here's what she wanted:
"Take the kids on a field trip that will allow our Troops to see America's best. Let them know that we don't just remember all of those that come from big cities, but from smalltown USA."

So? We began our search for smalltown USA. The first place we found is really a treat. At least three Canteeners will be able to tell you what our first smalltown USA place is like. So? Look for them on the thread.

Before we get started, the FR Canteen would like to thank Allen Muma of azjerome.com. Thank you Allen for providing us details for our FR Canteen Field Trip. You've been absolutely wonderful.

Troops and Canteen!!
Off to Jerome, Arizona for today! Enjoy! Make sure to post any pictures or facts that you may find on the thread about Jerome on the thread! (Click to enlarge all the pictures)

Located high on top of Cleopatra Hill (5,200 feet) between Prescott and Flagstaff is the historic copper mining town of Jerome, Arizona.

When the town was just a small mining camp, financing was needed to pull the copper from the abundant ore. After some coercion from his wife, Eugene Jerome made the investment. Although he never visited the town, the town took his name. (*Eugene Jerome was Winston Churchill's mother's cousin.)

Jerome's post office was established September 10, 1883 and has never been discontinued. Once the fifth largest city in Arizona, Jerome has now been reduced to a ghost of a city. Copper was the mainstay and the mines are rumored to have started over 1000 years ago by the Tuzigoot Indians. In 1882, the United Verde Copper company was formed by James A. McDonald and Eugene Jerome of New York, and Governor Tritle of Arizona. (For more information please click here.)

Remember Allen Muma? He was the gentleman that had to endure speaking to Mojo on the phone? (Yes! We all feel bad for him. Sorry Allen!)

When he's not letting cyber tourists browse Jerome, AZ via his website at www.azjerome.com , he's a proud owner of the establishment above. You must click on the picture to see the website for this quaint B&B. Please make reservations if you are ever in the area. Besides, Ma would love to try Miss Jackie's "secret chocolate chip" cookie. Yep, especially the copper mines.

The research was incidental, I was confused over the concept of deporting miners from Arizona to New Mexico. That's a deportation?

When I was checking out that story two weeks ago, I ran across the Jerome connection.

Isn't Calico in or near the Chocolate Mts., the site now of either Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Station or the National Training Center?

Yesss I have dreams of making a go there myself someday.

I have friends in prescott that make a killing off the sedona crowd

Good evening everyone!

It sure was fun doing this thread. We happened to find this town via a search on Google for "Smalltown USA". When we found the website, it was the first city listed. We went to the website and we came across azjerome.com.

Because MoJo doesn't follow instructions like most folks we happened to luck out with this one. MoJo called the number listed elsewhere. When the Chamber of Commerce number had been found, Allen answered the phone. He was very generous and gracious with his time. I explained what the FR Canteen was about and that we would be highlighting his town. He provided a lot of detail on the phone and via his website for all of us to enjoy.

He also has offered a stay at his Ghost City Inn Bed & Breakfast to one of our Active Duty personnel that wins the contest that Ma and MoJo have yet to think up. So? Everyone be looking for that in the coming days.

We lucked out and are very grateful for everything Allen did in helping us. Thank you, Allen!

Also, if you have a chance to stay in Jerome...Please consider supporting Allen for helping to Support Our Troops!!

Don't forget HJ that the Copper Queen is haunted big time and so is Big Nosed Kate's in Tombstone.

Um, I should explain something I just wrote.

I found the Chamber of Commerce number and was about to dial it when Allen picked up on the other line. What a great guy!

I can't sing his praises enough!
