~ CANTEEN FIELD TRIP ~

Welcome to the FR Canteen's Thursday Field Trip!!
Ma decided that we needed to do something fun. She gave us a difficult, but interesting task. Here's what she wanted:
"Take the kids on a field trip that will allow our Troops to see America's best. Let them know that we don't just remember all of those that come from big cities, but from smalltown USA."

So? We began our search for smalltown USA. The first place we found is really a treat. At least three Canteeners will be able to tell you what our first smalltown USA place is like. So? Look for them on the thread.

"America's Most Vertical City" and "Largest Ghost Town in America".

NAME: Jerome COUNTY: Yavapai ROADS: 2WD Paved LEGAL INFO: T16N, R2E CLIMATE: Mild winter, mild summer BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime POPULATION: 329

COMMENTS: Most of the town is original. The original hotel has been reopened and is worth staying at. Most buildings are occupied. REMAINS: Most everything is still there. ECONOMY: Tourism

Located high on top of Cleopatra Hill (5,200 feet) between Prescott and Flagstaff is the historic copper mining town of Jerome, Arizona.

When the town was just a small mining camp, financing was needed to pull the copper from the abundant ore. After some coercion from his wife, Eugene Jerome made the investment. Although he never visited the town, the town took his name. (*Eugene Jerome was Winston Churchill's mother's cousin.)

Jerome's post office was established September 10, 1883 and has never been discontinued. Once the fifth largest city in Arizona, Jerome has now been reduced to a ghost of a city. Copper was the mainstay and the mines are rumored to have started over 1000 years ago by the Tuzigoot Indians. In 1882, the United Verde Copper company was formed by James A. Chiricahau....its not a ghost town to most....but it is to the chiricahau apache who dominated this area. Geronimo and cochise used this as a home base. The calvalry established a camp at FT Hauchuca.......

Ok, I haven't read the comments yet, but this is great! I have a co-worker and good friend who spent a weekend in Jerome last year, it may have been in Allen's Bed and Breakfast!

Is that where you stayed, sportsterman? If not, he can tell us and the troops a little more about Jerome!

All deserts are unique.

there is none like the mojave, or sonoran.

Those are two of the best.

the anza borrego desert is pretty cool too.

I spent many times in the mojave.

Okay, the folks in Bisbee celebrated the great Deportation of the Wobblies just a few weeks ago. When I did some research on it, I discovered that Jerome was also involved! Go figure, the Wobblies made great inroads in organizing the miners.

The Jerome Deportation

Although the Bisbee Deportation is better documented, the Jerome Deportation was the precursor for what was to follow on July 12, 1917, when more than 1,100 men were rounded up in Bisbee and transported to Columbus, New Mexico.

Prior to 1901 the Arizona mining industry was financed and controlled by eastern investors. The town of Jerome is named for Eugene Jerome, a New York attorney who invested capital to purchase the claim that started it all.

What mylife and I know but noone else is saying...

Jerome is on the NE flank of Mingus Mountain and Prescott lies across the valley from the SW flank. The drive that mylife is saying is a real 'treat' includes going up, over, and back down the mountain!!

You can do the same by driving down through Jerome, crossing the Verde River valley, then up into Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon to top out on the Coconino plateau on which sits Flagstaff.

And as beautiful as that drive is, it's a piker compared to the Salt River Canyon or Hannagan's Meadow.

The only ghost town I have ever been in is Calico in CA.

It's amazing what the people of Jerome have done to rescuscitate their town. It's similar to what has happened in Bisbee...the artisans have kept it alive and thriving.

But I'm not sure I'd agree with mylife when he says it isn't a ghost town. Oh, maybe not in the traditional sense, but Mrs. HJ gets the willies whenever we go through there. It may indeed be haunted!!
