I really don't know why you are assuming that Sandy leaked this, because an indictment is just around the corner.Leaking it wouldn't stop the indictment.

Are you kidding me - This immediately hurts any would be prosecution - (tips off many people to what is up) - allows the DEM's (and Berger) to claim a political witch-hunt....which further erodes a prosecutors case.

This isn't a REP leak (that is just DEM spin) it came from Berger or Clinton's - take your pick - My guess is Berger to try and head off an indictment -

And if you don't think the media can influence an FBI investigation - that is just naive (IMO). Berger and his team know this as well -

If Berger thought he could be indicted...his best shot is to make this whole thing look like a political witch hunt type drama - (BINGO...he's got that now if the media keep running with it for him).

"My take is Berger leaked the information for his own protection...."

More likely, the Justice Dept wanted to hold up the indictment until after the release of the 9/11 report so as not to be accused of trying to influence their findings.

Berger knew that the indictment would come down soon after the release of the report this week. He gave a heads-up to Kerry who freaked out because he didn't want the story breaking during his national convention, so he either leaked it himself or told Berger to leak it immediately.

The timing of the leak seems awfully suspicious. It would be to the Republicans advantage to have the story break at the time of indictment next week.

Why does it take nine months to charge somebody with an offense that they admit to commiting?

LOL! You're one of the few who noticed what I meant. The man has publicly admitted committing a felony. So where the hell are the DC police?

Good grief!

Somebody in an earlier thread said that there are cameras and tapes are reviewed.

I've heard it both ways. We'll have to wait and see. I'm hoping there are some tapes and/or photos.

Could be the other shoe to drop...

Maybe.

There's more to this than meets the eye...I know about National Security investigations having been through one. Investigating and prosecuting what Sandy Berger did doesn't take this long to complete.

Then you obviously know more about it than me (I know nothing). I would say it might take time if you're following a very tangled and complicated web populated by some very powerful people with a lot of walls built around them. We can hope anyway. It's starting to look very, very messy indeed.

It's beginning to be clear the mainstream press really can't afford to sit on the sidelines on this one, because some close competitor is going to be a player and get ahead of them. Single exception may be the NYT, but they're in an alternate universe. Even if this could be suppressed in the major newspapers and networks, talk radio, Fox and internet sites like FR and Drudge will run with it. That's why the WaPo is starting to get with it. They'll follow the lines of the web once they're started, they can't afford not to. I also wonder if the DOJ or FBI doesn't need to get Sandy Berger into custody immediately -- in large part for protecting him.

Exactly. The dems have already tried all their usual tricks to divert the focus from the real problem. Incloudign trotting out that old BRWC thing. We gotta hang in there and we also have to go around our congress critters cause they've folded on us too many times. Write letters to local editors and to local TV station managers. Call in on talk shows, national and local. Protest outside every Kerry/Edwards event.

"I just remember that security issues during the Clinton administration were very lax indeed."

I just realized that the security for the CLinton's wasn't lax at all. The miisino of Clinton's security team was different than other administrations. Rather than focusing on protecting the interests of the country the focused on protecting the interests of the Clintons. That was job one and everybody did it well, from Sandy Berger to Craig Livingstone. The Clinton's created their own Secret Police to protect them.

There is a credible suggestion that Sandy Berger might have made GWBs military Records disappear.

Did you, or anyone, see Berger on Fox giving that 30 sec statement? I did, and he looked absolutely terrified.

I think he's cooperating, that the investigation goes way beyond him, and that he leaked to stay alive, frankly.

Drudge is behind; we knew all that last night.

True. We even knew why the NA employees became suspicious. Something about seeing documents peeking out from Burglar's pants. LOL.

What is our authority for the claim that these were all copies and none were originals?

O'Reilly tonight asserted that all of the documents in question were copies, as have other sources. I honestly don't know if the archive reps have stated this to be fact, though.

Berger must have had some reason for destroying some of the documents that he took home

You're right. If he did destroy the documents, then his motive for doing so is puzzling. Of course, Berger could simply be making a convenient bogus claim to explain their absence.

If he believed that he had the one and only copy of these documents then his actions would infer a motive - a straight cover-up based on the destruction of the incriminating evidence.

True, but based on comments from those familiar with the archives, it doesn't seem to be a logical proposition that a man as informed as Berger would believe he was removing the original documents. Given that, the likelihood of a motive for document destruction seems less probable. Berger had some other motive, I'm guessing. Perhaps he swiped the docs for the purposes of building a defensive case on behalf of the Clinton administration's handling of terrorism in advance of public hearings, or for the purposes of spinning an offensive case against Bush's anti-terror efforts, etc. Knowledge is power and all that.

It has now entered into Watergate territory

I was an avid follower of Watergate as it unfolded. This really reminds me of that time. Heads will roll, justice will prevail. Exciting!

I'm wondering, if the Democrats knew this was coming could it be the reason for their incessant warnings about the 'October surprise'.

I don't care how scared he is, now. Until he puts on that orange jumpsuit, (after the strip and cavity search), and hears the clang of cold steel behind him, hearing the laughter of the animals in adjacent cells, Sandy Berger is going to think that he'll get away with it.

Put that fat blubbering idiot behind bars and THEN start asking questions!
