I swear I read in one of the first online breaking news stories that the Archive employees called Clinton's lawyer Bruce Lindsay first...then Lindsay informed Berger...then the Archive employees went to his house and picked up the documents except for the one's he thinks he musta thrown away. Have I lost my mind or has the story changed?
I wondered if that's standard procedure for when you see a democrat commiting a crime, call Clinton's lawyer.

They were slow to get on board with Watergate too.

Of course, Watergate happed in the 1970's, we're in the "internet age". One newspaper news cycle is a lifetime these days.

Recall that Sandy Berger's attorney admitted Berger "knowingly" took top secret documents.

Those words hit me.

As in criminal statutes:

"Did knowingly, willfully, and maliously...."

I know what they're saying and don't need to check MRC. My point is they're covering it.

I just have little patience with "woe is me!" handwringing and decided to take it out on you.

My apologies. But really, this is not the time to worry about that.

I think it was on Fox News that I heard that Berger and his lawyer are still 'working on a deal' or words to that effect, with Justice Dept.

So just maybe there is no deal to be had and Berger thought the only thing he could do at this point, was to leak story and hope his Lib/Dem buddies could help bail him out.

I'm betting-and hoping-that Berger is charged before the end of July.

There's a reason it's taking so long. I was listening to the Hugh Hewitt show this afternoon. I hope I get it right.Hewitt is a lawyer who has worked in the WH and I think the Justice dept.He was saying something to the effect that since the missing documents are the copies, means that more than likely they had notes written in the margin,so the DOJ needs to try and piece this puzzle together(or something like that)tp (sic) determine what info he was trying to get.

Now that is something I didn't ponder because I was thinking copies as in Burger made copies or had copies made so he could look at them. This appears to mean he was looking at copies as in CC: NSA, CIA director, WH Chief of Staff, POTUS. etc, etc.

So the handwritten notes would be the musings/political ramblings of people in the Administration.

That's why this was going on IMHO. Someone didn't want their, "we need to keep this low profile/don't tell FBI about this (hello Gorelick) because, blah blah blah.

Someone, or several someones are really sweating what they put down on paper inre the millenium report.

Might have been, "if we go hard at Al Queda it will hurt the Isreal/Palistinian peace talks.

Can someone refresh my memory but wasn't one of the last things Clintigula tried to do in 2000 was push through a Pali/Israeli peace accord, besides his round the world in my last 80 days in office.

I didn't see that, but if true...

This web gets tighter and tighter around the leadership of the DNC. This would explain the desperation play McAwful used this afternoon, the Freedom of Information request. I am beginning to think that DeLay is right. This just may be the third rate burglary of infamy.

"Saw somewhere the archivists first notified Bruce Lindsey of all people."

And can you name the two possible reasons why government employees responsible for securing top secret national security documents would call a Democratic Party lawyer about Berger's thefts?!

1. They were solid Dem operatives who would do anything for a fellow Dem, even if it meant they went to jail for breeching national security, or

2. It meant that the sting to burn Berger's boss was already being run by the pros at that point...

Did any of the press accounts say exactly how many copies of the Richard Clarke draft of the 1999 Intelligence Report were taken?

The talking point is true. Hell yeah Burger walked off with "copies" of that report. Circulated copies. Likely returned marked up, indicating who received them and their comments and edits.

I'd be curious to know who received those drafts.

"They were only copies" is going to be the new "It's just about sex."

Right. After all our countries enemies can only make use of information when it comes from original documents.

Per Byron York article in Nat. Review, there were no surveillance cameras in room-rats.

I believe I also read somewhere this was not in the Archival building, but a room set up specifically for people to view secure documents before testifying in front of 9-11 Comm. Don't know exactly what building the room was in, but sounded like it was in same building where hearings were going on...

Thanks! It sure makes sense to me. Now if only the archivists had back up copies of the ones Berger "lost"!This is all all beginning to look like a big jig saw puzzle!

Yes, I was surprised when I read about that. The proof of what he did must be overwhelming.

Thought we could file that away in our minds. I haven't seen it in an article.

Thanks, I actually remember reading that the FBI hadn't talked with him but given no actual authority is going on the record, I am suspicious of most everything I read on this.

Out of curiosity, what is your take on why Berger thought he could remove and lose documents without consequence? I can't get past this, regardless of what he was after or how critical it was, he had to know he was going to get caught.
