CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The search for 27-year-old Lori Hacking has made an unlikely connection between Salt Lake City and Chapel Hill.Lori Hacking reportedly left her Salt Lake home around daybreak Monday to go jogging and has not been seen since. Mark Hacking, Lori's husband, told family, investigators and the media that he and his wife had planned to move to Chapel Hill to attend medical school, but on Wednesday, WRAL learned that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has no record of Mark Hacking and that he is not registered to be a student at the medical school this fall. UNC officials also told WRAL that Mark Hacking never even applied to the school. WRAL also checked with Duke Medical School, and Hacking is not registered at that school. WRAL spoke with investigators in Utah and they have no explanation at this point as to why Hacking would lead people to believe he was coming to school in Chapel Hill.

The similarity to Scott Peterson is eerie. Scott told family and friends that he was going to ASU, even picked and moved there. But never even applied to the school. The only good thing about this case coming up now is that it will hurt Scott. He was beginning to make inroads into public opinion, especially with men, who couldn't conceive of a man killing his pregnant wife, just to avoid becoming a father.

You are right, and a person can take classes for credit without applying for Med School or a specific degree. Many times it is best way, in case you end up wanting to go elsewhere. Those grades are still transferrable.

In fact, most classes are just now registering for the fall through late August. It would be premature to think he was lying at this point, maybe it wasn't going to be done the normal route.

This is starting to remind me of the murder of a young woman who went to my college (not my class, but I overlapped with her). Her husband had supposedly built a successful medical supplies business, in which all his and her relatives had "invested". The charade had been going for years, while she finished law school, practiced law full time for a few years, had a baby and cut back to working part time. They lived in a nice big house near the college, largely financed by the phony investments.

Just when the whole house of cards was about to collapse on him, he drowned her in the bathtub in their home (while their one year old daughter was in the house) and made up a story about an intruder doing it. Turned out there had never been even the tiniest medical supply business, and he'd been spending all the money on call girls and topless dancers. And naturally, there was a sizeable life insurance policy on the wife. He's now locked up for life, and the little girl is being raised jointly by the two sets of grandparents.

It does sound like a stretch of an excuse however. Let's ask an expert. Devil what do you think?

What is it now . . .

1 out of a thousand men is actually tolerable husband material?

Sigh.

"....It's beginning to look a lot like Laci...."

I thought that while watching the report on FOXNews last night. Had to scratch my brain when they said she went jogging in an area known to have "homeless" people throughout. Why would a logical thinking, young, gorgeous pregnant girl, put herself in such a place so early in the a.m. and alone?

Also, it appears the husband's lies are already beginning to show up.

Excellent point.

So many people are spoiled, spoiled, spoiled to the point that when they want something...they want it right then and there. Cell phones, drive thru meals, abortions, high-speed Internet, microwaves, etc. Not that having these things is a crime, but I think that many of the 20-somethings have never had to wait for a darn thing. Quick fixes for everything.

Just my opinion, of course.

They wouldn't be the first men to kill their wives/girlfriends to avoid paternity. They had that character in the NFL do it years ago. I guess in their minds, the law doesn't give them much recourse.

I heard that this afternoon....this is getting weird ( I won't say "curiouser and curiouser" because Dan Rather has the current trademark on that 'intellectual' phrase).

If John-2 weren't busy running for national office, he might be on a plane to SLC to play defense attorney; looks like hubby is gonna need a heavy hitter.
