Hastert Statement on Berger Allegations

WASHINGTON, July 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Today, House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) released the following statement regarding allegations that former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger removed highly classified terrorism documents and handwritten notes from a secure reading room during preparations for the 9/11 Commission hearings:

"I am profoundly troubled by allegations that former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger removed highly classified documents from the National Archives regarding the Clinton Administration's handling of terrorist attacks prior to the September 11th attacks.

"What could those documents have said that drove Mr. Berger to remove them without authorization from a secure reading room for classified documents?

"What information could be so embarrassing that a man with decades of experience in handling classified documents would risk being caught pilfering our nation's most sensitive secrets?

"Did these documents detail simple negligence or did they contain something more sinister? Was this a bungled attempt to rewrite history and keep critical information from the 9/11 Commission and potentially put their report under a cloud?

"It is my understanding that Mr. Berger shoved this classified information into his clothing to smuggle them out of the National Archives. Press reports indicate that Archival staff became concerned when documents began to disappear and specifically marked additional documents to track them. A number of those documents also turned up missing.

"Mr. Berger has a lot of explaining to do. He was given access to these documents to assist the 9/11 Commission, not hide information from them. The American people and the 9/11 families don't want cover-ups when it comes to the War on Terror. They want the truth. And so does the U.S. House of Representatives."

I have a feeling this is MUCH larger than a simple case of stealing docs.

Oh yeah. For Hastert to come out and make these very strong statements, I would say this is on the scale of Watergate, if not bigger. This is one time they're not going to get away with sweeping it under the rug.

What ever it was .. it was pretty damning for Sandy to put his future on the line like he did...

Not doing it might have put his future on the line more decisively, with an Arkansas Dirt Nap.

CNN is reporting this that the records Berger listed and tossed were related to Richard Clark, and the Clinton White House's strategy for addressing terrorism. I think we pretty much know that Clark's whole story about Bush is bogus, that Clark's public comments since he surfaced have been an orchestrated effort to defame Pres. Bush, and that the documents Berger took would prove this.

Some of the documents were the only ones in existence. Some of the documents had been copied, so Berger didn't successfully hide them.

Again, for safety's sake.

If you're going to sell out the Clintons, you don't want them to think you are.

Here's a thought .. what if someone outted Sandy to discredit him for anything that may still come out? Kind of like a preemptive strike

The White House was not going to touch this

From Hasterts comments it looks like the White House won't have to "touch" this, simply respond to the request of Congress ... respond to the request of the members of the 9/11 comission...

Anything is possible, but I think the way he stole the docs virtually assured him he'd get caught...

The surveillance is so heavy, this wasn't a sting.

jmho...I could be wrong.

There are so many threads going that some good comments are being scattered about. Maybe we need one super thread started.

Anyway, for all those doubters that thought this President was just rolling over when it came to the Clintons, I want to remnd you he is playing Chess, while they are playing checkers.

This next election is the last one for President Bush, he has been waiting until the right moment to make his move against the Clinton, and I think this is it.

This is not missing silverware, or "W"s off of keyboards, this is a big time crime where a Clinton puppet has been caught red handed, and has confessed already.

The next three months are going to be real interesting.

If this is true, it is big. WE, who do not rely on the MSM, know Clarke is a liar, but this might force the MSM to admit that Clarke was lying about Clinton's anti-terrorism efforts in order to promote his own anti-Iraq war agenda.

Why did he keep going on the TV shows and spew his Bush lied

He was cooperating with authorities already. Singing like a canary, wearing a wire, the whole bit. Spewing "Bush lied" was what he was expected to do. Otherwise, the bigger fish the Justice Department wants to nail would have gotten suspicious, and just had him whacked.

I hope that DOJ really puts pressure on Berger. Only with heat and pressure will he crack, and implicate others who are behind this plot (i.e., the Clintons).

These people have been playing politics with our national security for 12 years. It's about time they were held accountable for their criminal activity.
