NEW YORK - New York Police Department officers are blasting a ruling by a federal judge preventing them from searching demonstrator's bads outside the GOP convention later this year.
Judge Robert Sweet, a federal judge in Manhattan, pronounced yesterday that searches of blankets and bulky bags and backpacks may not be searched en masse in absence of any "specific threat".
The ruling also limits the number of streets the NYPD may close around Madison Square Garden and prohibits cops from "penning" protestors behind metal barricades.
Sweet stated that the finding was an attempt to give definition to a resolution which can serve the "encourage free expression".
Sweet went on to say that the police intentions to search all bulky bags, blankets and backpacks as a preventative measure was an invasion of privacy.
The New York Civil Liberties Union immediately hailed it as an "historic victory".

Does not take a rocket scientist to see whose side he is on. Who the hell asked him to make a ruling on this anyway?
Ummm... I would consider the statements on their website and in their training materials to be specific threats.
Becki
Nothing like a liberal judge, who wanted to legalize crack and heroin, to have the final say when it comes to our national security!!! What a frickin joke!!!
This and The Bergermeister and his Toon buddies are placing all of us at risk. Lock and Load! Thank God I live in VA.

He got that part right.

Man is this judge transparent.
Its obvious he WANTS maximum demonstrator pandamonium,
and/or a successful terrorist strike
I'll bet there have been no similar rulings for Boston
So why are bags searched going into court rooms and court houses? I haven't heard of any "specific" threats. Oh, I see. Judges are just soooooo important for democracy and freedom to survive and crime to prevail.
Thank you, President Carter, for putting this fine man in office.

They are the Enemy Within!!!!
I will say it again: I am willing to testify in open court to this judge's "overt act" as required by Article III, Section 3 of the US Constitution.
The demonstrators have a "kit" of stuff that awaits the police department (e.g. BAGS of marbles) which are all going to be carried in a bag, bagpack, or other sack-like object.
Forget the politics of situation (though I will duly note that there is no equal protests going on at the DNC convention), this is a clear danger to law enforcement officers.
This judge should be taken out to the local precinct and be given a full cavity search...WITH A SHOVEL! Maybe that would straighten him out.
If they cannot be searched that they should not be able to bring them into the city. Why not treat it just like going to a ball game at Yankee stadium?
I'd HATE to be living DOWNWIND of NYC about now.
What a marvel of modern judicial mental power. Will he be in attendance at the festivities? Likely not.
Good point. Are bags and backpacks of people going into the courtroom where this judge works searched ?
Bullsh*t ruling that will be slapped down. Otherwise the airport screeeners couldn't search luggage.
Yeah....and baseball games too!!!! (searched bags/blankets)

But these people are not entering the convention site. They are on the street. Should police start checking all bags an backpacks outside of court houses?
