Ashcroft: Berger 9/11 Docs Reveal Clinton Security Lapse

A sensitive after action report on the foiled Millennium bomb plot, portions of which were allegedly pilfered by former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger, sounded the alarm that al Qaida operatives had entered the U.S. and were preparing to strike.

In testimony before the 9/11 Commission in April, Attorney General John Ashcroft detailed the highly classified March 2000 document, saying it contained a set of sweeping recommendations on how to combat the al Qaida threat that were completely ignored by the Clinton White House.

"The NSC's Millennium After Action Review declares that the United States barely missed major terrorist attacks in 1999 -- with luck playing a major role," Ashcroft told the Commission.

"Among the many vulnerabilities in homeland defenses identified, the Justice Department's surveillance and FISA operations were specifically criticized for their glaring weaknesses."

"It is clear from the review," declared Ashcroft, "that actions taken in the Millennium Period should not be the operating model for the U.S. government."

The Millennium plot review warned the Clinton administration "of a substantial al Qaida network and affiliated foreign terrorist presence within the U.S., capable of supporting additional terrorist attacks here," the Bush attorney general said.

"Furthermore, fully seventeen months before the September 11 attacks, the review recommends disrupting the al Qaida network and terrorist presence here using immigration violations, minor criminal infractions, and tougher visa and border controls," he explained.

Ashcroft's comments suggested why a former Clinton national security official might not want the information contained in the Millennium review to ever see the light of day.

"Despite the warnings and the clear vulnerabilities identified by the NSC in 2000," he told the Commission, "no new disruption strategy to attack the al Qaida network within the United States was deployed. It was ignored in the Department's five-year counterterrorism strategy."

You people need to get a grip and read the OTHER thread; this is an ongoing investigation.

The documents were taken in October of 2003, that's how Ashcroft knew about them!

These had already been seen by the reviewers on the commision, from both sides.

No, they were NOT seen by the 9-11 Commission.

It most certainly IS against the law to take those handwritten notes out of that room.

And Sandy Berger HAD to know it.

To: MojoWire; what's up

Bill Clinton sent Sandy Berger to the National Archives to go through his national security papers BEFORE the 9-11 Commission saw them.

Sandy Berger took the NOTES and TWO OR THREE COPIES of the 2000 Millienium Terror Report.

What's the US Code citation (not that I doubt it; I'd just like the facts to back it up)?

The lawyer's words, as quoted by AP: "Berger was allowed to take handwritten notes but also knew that taking his own notes out of the secure reading room was a 'technical violation of Archive procedures, but it is not all clear to us this represents a violation of the law,' Breuer said."

At least Fawn Hall was honest when she testified she removed NSC dox on IranContra by slipping them into her boots.Had she not been given immunity she would have been prosecuted.

However we are to believe that a former National Security Adviser inadvertantly removed documents from the Archives. Funny that Fawn Hall's story was all over the news for weeks. This story about Berger makes Drudge and little else. Must have been because Fawn was so easy on the eyes.

So why is this just coming out now in the press?

Unless Bush decides to play politics to win including dirty politics and selective leaks, he will lose in November against the dems who live everyday to lie, cheat and steal. Bush and the RNC seem utterly clueless on how to use the media effectively.

"New Tone" doesn't mean Bush can't tell the truth and report out facts on how the dems and Clinton have hurt our national security. The administration owes it to the public to educate them more effectively on what's going on.

New Tone my arse. It's not that. They are scared and don't want to or know how to street fight with the dems. You have to fight to win. That's just how it is. This "girlie" boy nice-guy crap stinks.

"Unfortunately, whoever he gave them to hadn't gotten them back when the Feds came to visit, so he said they were "lost."

They way the story was originally written, it seems like no one had authorization to remove any documents from the 9/11 Committee's Classified Reading Room. Archive employees witnessed Berger stuffing the notes in his pants. One wonders, if he inadvertently stuffs other, random objects, in other settings, into his pants. He must be really welcome at the Ace Hardware store.

Clinton isn't running for office, Senator Kerry is.

Yeah, right. Like who? This whole thing involved Berger alone. Like I'm going to sit here and hold my breath on that. Nothing will ever come of this. Berger will get his hand slapped. Look what it took to impeach Clinton and still these girlie boys in the Congress wouldn't convict him.
