WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.
Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.
Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.
"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.
Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.
The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.
When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

Thanks--I'm reading my pings and making my way through the thread and will keep an eye out for #624. I just found several articles and the tone was just as I recalled. Make it seem the Bush administration was holding information back when here was Berger destroying it.
The audacity is breathtaking. This is just like it was all the time during that administration. Good GOD.
"Charles Ruff - Heart attack."
You're correct. Don't know why Bob Bennett popped into my head.....he was also involved in the defense as I recall but it was Ruff that argued at the impeachment hearing.
I can't believe how stupid and arrogant Clinton and his people are. This makes Watergate look lame.
"I remember that something that Rumsfeld said to Hillary! really seemed to rattle her."
I also remember her being rattled....but I believe Hillary made a comment about something, and Rumsfield replied, "I don't know how you would know that....when the Pentagon hasn't seen it." I am sure I quoted this wrong, but it was something like that. Really can't remember what Hillary's comment was. Sure someone here can clear this up for us. My old brain is tired right now!!
It all might be informative in understanding why the Dems have been going after Cheney from day one. I love the President, but when it comes down to political war, Cheney strikes me as having both the experience, relationships and mind to outwit the Dems.
"Maybe Hillary knew this shoe would drop and that is why she was hesitant about speaking and Dem Convention."
"WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned."
Initially that is what I thought, however, if the leak had come from the Bush administration the AP would have made sure that came out. So maybe it was from Hillry's camp that did this huge dump just prior to the convention.
Just broke on AP that they think Berger took
documents that replaced documents he took earlier.
Link?
Perhaps the reason the WH didn't turn over all the Clinton records Lindsay demanded was this....they were too busy comparing them with the originals - to see just what Berger had replaced. LOL. I do love a good conspiracy!
Hmmmmm ... the plot thickens
I don't have the link.
I am being mailed this info.
The originals and copies do not match, someone doctored them and Berger was attempting to correct.
Yeah, and you probably think that Terry McAwful wasn't investigated for insider trading because of political consideration just because he made so much more than Martha.
We know that Ashcroft is totally fair, but if he investigates all these rats three months out from Nov 2, we know the criminal media will say it is partisan GOP out to get the innocent rats.
Of all the sitting members on the commission, who was in the best position of knowing which documents might be the most incriminating towards the Clinton administration?
Im not calling any names, but the initials are Jammie Grolick.
So, in order to "get" the documents they needed to see, the commission had to know the document existed and ask for it?
I still remember Albright criticizing Bush for naming Iran as part of the axis of evil. She said that the Clinton administration had made real progress in the relationship and that Bush's remarks threatened their work.
Could this be what Berger REALLY did?
We need to keep our eyes open and our keyboards at the ready.
We're aware that the Dims love playing the "victim" card.
It's the only thing that makes the disturbed self-haters feel good about themselves.
They are frantic to begin the whining, and assuming the position of "victim" ....to deflect blame and save their sorry rumps.
Watch Kerry start expresiing his "tolerance and compassion" for that Pantload Berger.
We'll just see about that.
Look in AOL Update news.
That's what I have just been told.
