COMPUTER HELP
July 19, 2004 | GYPSY286

Posted on 07/19/2004 7:52:56 AM PDT by GYPSY286

I have 2 problems with my computer. When I boot up, after icons appear, I get a box that states "shortcut problem" with MORZE2.lnk. If I click OK to get rid of the box, another immediately appears with a different .lnk extension and if I click OK again, I get another one, another one, and so on with different names. I've attempted to locate these stupid links and even when into dos to try and delete them without success.

The other problem is I know I have spyware because I downloaded two different spyware killers which scanned my machine and told me so but wouldn't "kill" them unless I paid a fee. My computer is really sluggish and often when I am typing (like now) keyboard freezes and I can type no more.

Any help/suggestions would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.

Try Spybot - Search & Destroy, Also AdAware, by Lavasoft. The basic versions are free and quite effective. You can probably find them at Download.com, or just do a Google search.

Go to majorgeeks.com, and click on their "Spyware Tools" section. Download FREEWARE copies of Ad-Aware and Spybot:Search and Destroy and Zone Alarm.

Next, boot your machine up in "SAFE" mode and run Ad-Aware and Spybot. Be sure to update these two as soon as you download them. Follow the cues.

Then, download Firefox .9 from Mozilla.org and make it your default browser. Use Explorer ONLY for windows updates.

Additionally, download "CWShredder" and run it. It'll get the remnants of the virus you have.

Which programs want to charge a fee? AdAware doesn't charge for the basic cleaning.

Spyware Blaster will prevent the installation of new spyware after it the machine is cleaned.

I do a full system restore once a year (factory condition). I gotten to where it only takes me 2hrs to do it will all my reloads. The two previous suggestions are good quick fixes as well. I also do a defrag once a week. These are all good suggestions.

...and use them in the order 1.) Spybot, then 2.) AdAware.
Be sure you download the latest updates. After sweeping with these, do one more -- download and run CWShred which will find any "trojans" that the first two missed, such as
hijackers.

Provide more information and you will get better answers.

What Win version? 98? XP? etc...

"You know you have spyware..." Does the other spykillers tell you what it is or just that 'something' exists?

What spykiller programs, if any have you run?

Help us help you. Give us enough information to work with.

Check your startup folder. There should br something pointing to the program. Also search for all references to the program and delete.

In addition to Ad-aware and Spybot, go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and click on "Scan Your PC".

I have the same problem, and I've downloaded all of the Spy, Ad, Pest, etc. killers -- all the freebies and even some that charge a fee. No help. I think I'm going to have to reinstall everything and start over. And that is a lot of trouble because I have files I need to keep -- and how do I know the files can be reinstalled without reinfecting. HELP!

Forget all this chasing of problems.

Backup your personal files to HD or CD and reformat the machine. Re-Install the OS and get all the latest updates. Now go and purchase/ install imaging software. Then image your machine.

From then on - it'll only be a few minutes to redo your machine. You'll sleep better.

Thanks for the tips folks! These days I need all the help I can get to keep my machine clean. I'm already running MailWasher in conjunction with Norton Antivirus.

I've been averaging at least 15 virus attempts per day!

After running spyware removal, run regedit,
navigate in the left pane to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
On the right side, you can identify programs that are configured to launch when Windows loads, select the offending string and delete it.
You can export the registry first to a .reg file which will restore the values, in case you accidentally delete something you shouldn't.

Looks like they've covered everything.

Say hello to Crow and Cambot for me. Sometimes I really miss Joel.

I saw this reference in a forum group. It didn't give any solution or any more information.

morze2.exe trojan carrying "troj tomadi.a"

You might run a file scan to see whether you have morze2.exe on your system. If you do, you might assume it is carryng the "troj tomadi.a" trojan virus.

A whole discussion with possible solutions is at this link:
