Consider this: The first World Trade Center bombing on February 26, 1993...What if?
July 18th, 2004 | Jim Curtis

Posted on 07/18/2004 7:59:29 PM PDT by Jim_Curtis

On 2/26/93 Saddam's buddy Ramzi Yousef didn't attempt to kill 6 people and mess up a parking ramp real good, they attempted something else.

What did they attempt and if they had succeeded at it, what would have been the consequences?

Why should the consequences be any different because they didn't succeed at their goal?

When one of the terrorists of the '93 WTC bombing was transported by helicopter over Manhattan he was taunted by a FBI agent, "Look, it's still standing." The terrorist replied, "We're not finished yet."

Interesting question . . . but I'm still trying to figure out how it was (IIRC) the FBI had a hidden camera of them making the bomb - but it still managed to be deployed.

Doug, do you recall this factoid?

I believe this undercover camera was in relation to plans to blow up the United Nations and other New York landmarks. This plot was discovered during an investigation following the '93 WTC bombing, and a middle-eastern informant was used during this investigation.

Well, what they attempted was to topple one of the towers on the other, which if it had succeeded would have taken out a lot more of the adjacent buildings than actually happened. It would have actually been significantly worse then 9/11. Nobody would have gotten out of the buildings alive, for one thing. And for another, the damage to the other buildings would have been nightmarish.

Fortunately, Yousef was a remarkably incompetent person, just like most people doing this sort of thing. The 9/11 bombers would have probably messed up a more complex plot (one that required managing their own planes, for example).

Okay. That does make more sense.

Thank you for setting me straight.

If in 1993 they had used 5 trucks filled with explosives and had managed to topple the tower and had things synchronized in such a way that that tower took out the other tower and ten times the fatalities of 9/11 occurred...what would our response have been and why should that response be any different because they failed at their objectives in 1993?

My guess is that if they had succeeded in toppling the towers, clinton would have declared martial law, dismissed congress and the courts, and made himself king for life.

Although to be fair he wasn't really in a position to do that until his second term, when he had all the executive orders in place and his pet Arkansas state police in charge of FEMA.

"Clinton Knew".

The question is "Which Clinton?"

They also had poison gas in their bomb (to kill those in the vicinity/stairwells) except that the bomb incinerated the poison.

Bubba and Reno weren't prepared to deal with International Terrorism on American shores. They were wrapped up with the planning for the Waco Raid (February 28th, 1993 - TWO DAYS later).

The ATF raid was a photo op (for more/continued funding) gone wrong.

I see you point. The attempt still deserves as much punishment as a successful operation. Would the US have acted in 1993 to take out the Taleban/AQ regime? No, unfortunately. Clinton would have pressured the UN to act. He might have sent Special Forces to to operation (I sure we would) and attempted to grab key suspects. But that would have been disastrous...again like Somalia. This would have have either inflamed public opinion to push for greater war (against Clinton desires) or retreat further from the region. But I see the American people more wanting full retribution than a retreat.

Be glad we are there in Afghanistan. Imagine how much stronger they would be today. Sending wave of operatives while continuing to train and equip thousands of terrorist cells.

Great subject and one that isn't discussed enough. I thought at the time it happened that our justice dept did a terrible job of handling this situation. I remember reading that had the truck been in a more strategic location, nearer one of the main posts, that perhaps it could have brought the building down.

IMO, Clinton was a very weak president. He had no balls. He didn't understand his primary responsibility - to keep us the citizens of this country, safe and secure from external harm. He failed badly.

Kerry will be eve worse. He'll put the security of this country in the hands of the U.N. the organization that ran away when their building was bombed. Geez

Thank Goodness for W, for Condoleezza Rice, for Cheney, for Rumsfeld. We are so very fortunate to have these people running our country.

Clinton's response would have been to blame 12 years of Reagan/Bush for creating the tragedy in NYC.

I have no recollection of a hidden camera showing the bomb making. I seem to recall that they wanted to have one tower topple on the other and kill tens of thousands with cyanide gas.
