iPod, therefore i Am. Steve Jobs may want to reconsider.

Posted on 07/18/2004 3:37:54 PM PDT by klimeckg

If you have not seen the cover of Newsweek, it shows the face of Steve Jobs of Apple computer holding an iPod. The heading reads: iPod, therefore i Am. Now this was not as blatant as John Lennon saying that the Beatles were greater than Jesus Christ, but it comes very close. If one recalls, John Lennon did not live a long life. And it is reported that Wang computers fell due to such boasting. I am told that Mr. Wang put his name in big letters on the top of the Wang building in Boston. When asked why he did this, he said he wanted all to know who Wang was. Shortly after this, he died and his son took over and that was the end of Wang computers.

So, when I see commerce using the scriptures to promote themselves I track the time and see what befalls them. Now, whether Mr. Jobs said this or simply allowed Newsweek to use the line I do not know, but he must have approved of it. My brother worked for Apple and has a few stories to tell about Mr. Jobs' character and person which are not at all surprising, but are not the warm fuzzy feelings one would think of the Apple CEO. I am not surprised to see Mr. Jobs building his Babylonian tower to the heavens in defiance and making such claims. I am curious to see how things pan out from this day forward.

And to think that I thought I had the corner marketed on these types of questions.

At least you didn't lose your winninet file.

Now's a good time to reassure everyone that you're not blonde. :-)

Me too. After all, the iPod is really just a highly sophisticated beeber like device (cheap on the streets of Tiajunna).

Many years ago, Descartes was sitting in a bar in Paris. When the bartender asked him if he wanted another beer, he replied, "I think not" and disappeared.

Jansenism was actually heretical as far as the Church was concerned, though, because it emphasizes predestination as opposed to free will.

Well, then! Guess that would make me heretical as well.

I could have sworn Descartes didn't believe in God. My bad.

I'm actually kind of charmed by the poster's (apparent) sincerity and the innocence of the mistake.

Or are you just joshin' us, klimeckg?

Wow, are you confused. It's not like he said "I am the name that must not be spoken: iPod."

That is right.
I am the name that is never spoken.

That is one of the many things I love about FR. You learn so much! It astounds me the nreadth and depth of knowledge we have here.

It also was interesting that almost all of the first posts (*ahem* mine being first) pointed out the massive error on the part of the author.

BTW, wasn't Descartes an atheist?

Very, very much the opposite.

Well, let's just hope she's a female. Because if it's a man, he'll think he has to be embarrassed and go get a new screen name.  Most men have so much testosterone they can't laugh at themselves like us wimmin' can.

How's that for stereotyping and painting with a broad brush? (pun intended) :-)

Well I can't speak to what you say but I do know that Jobs is making the same mistake with the iPod that he made with the Mac back in 1984. While the iPod is admittedly the coolest MP3 player out there, it is overpriced and too proprietary (you can only download Apple's AAC format off iTunes).

There are already lower-priced MP3 jukeboxes on the market that can basically do what the iPod can do and once these competitors produce a product that is at least as good (interface-wise), they will quickly eat Apple's lunch.

BTW, the iPod is saving Apple's bacon right now. The iPod now accounts for nearly 30% of Apple's revenue and they are not gaining any market share computer-wise. So if the iPod loses it's lustre, Apple is in deep trouble.

First off. Let's get one thing straight. This was Al Gore's brainchild. If you don't believe me, just as Al Gore. He is due all credit. Simple enough?

Am I the only one here whose tagline has a yellow background in the "Posting Comment" page? This is very strange...

I stand corrected! It is not scripture. The I Am is what threw me. Thanks for the adjustment. The point is, and it's nothing new that he is claiming himself a god and it is in my opinion that those that make strong claims in public eventually get judged before the final judgement.
