iPod, therefore i Am. Steve Jobs may want to reconsider.

Posted on 07/18/2004 3:37:54 PM PDT by klimeckg

If you have not seen the cover of Newsweek, it shows the face of Steve Jobs of Apple computer holding an iPod. The heading reads: iPod, therefore i Am. Now this was not as blatant as John Lennon saying that the Beatles were greater than Jesus Christ, but it comes very close. If one recalls, John Lennon did not live a long life. And it is reported that Wang computers fell due to such boasting. I am told that Mr. Wang put his name in big letters on the top of the Wang building in Boston. When asked why he did this, he said he wanted all to know who Wang was. Shortly after this, he died and his son took over and that was the end of Wang computers.

So, when I see commerce using the scriptures to promote themselves I track the time and see what befalls them. Now, whether Mr. Jobs said this or simply allowed Newsweek to use the line I do not know, but he must have approved of it. My brother worked for Apple and has a few stories to tell about Mr. Jobs' character and person which are not at all surprising, but are not the warm fuzzy feelings one would think of the Apple CEO. I am not surprised to see Mr. Jobs building his Babylonian tower to the heavens in defiance and making such claims. I am curious to see how things pan out from this day forward.

Wrong. Apple just had their best 3rd quarter in 8 years.

It was a resounding $61 million in profit from 2.1 billion in revenue. Barely enough to purchase one high end Gulf Stream jet. Apple has the operating margins of a publically regulated utility. Tellingly, that was the best the company could do in 8 years.
As I saw it from inside the company, it was being run for the personal amusement of those who had been there since the beginning. Typical corporate politics with the facade of California niceness. There are many things they just don't "get". The main strength of Jobs was the ability to put the fear of God into those people. He has his own pack of insiders for himself now. They handsomely reward themselves. Shareholders (those chumps) have never gotten a dividend. The only way to make money on this company is to either be an insider that gets one of the huge restricted stock grants or play the "bounce" of the stock price.

That said, my next computer purchase is probably going to be a high end Apple laptop. Windows is just a drag to work with, and Linux is waaaaaay to much work.

Yes, Socrates himself is particularly missed;

A lovely little thinker, but a bugger when he's pissed.

I'm reminded of the immortal words of Socrates:

"I drank what?!?!"

Huh?

I do hope you're joking.

The point is, and it's nothing new that he is claiming himself a god and it is in my opinion that those that make strong claims in public eventually get judged before the final judgement.

Nahhhh.... You're confusing Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle.

What's the difference between G-d and Larry Ellison?

G-d doesn't think that he's Larry Ellison!

Well, he took his ribbing like a man.

It takes true grit to show your face after confusing a French philosopher and the Holy God of Israel and then posting it in "breaking news" on FR (which is the posting equivalent of accidentally knocking the chimney off your house with a homemade bowling ball cannon -- something only testoterone would make you do -- and thereby proving that klimeckg is a man ;).

Maybe you were referring to Job's little cult. You know, the folks who worship Apple the way that Hanoi worships Uncle Ho. ;-)

Wonder where Despartes got it?

Huh???

Descartes' classic line, "I think therefore I am" has nothing to do with scriptures, with the possible exception that he might have been inspired by them, since he was said to be a religious man.

This was the response to the question, "How do we know we exist."

A truly satanic comic. Good thing we have Jack Chick around to counteract the effect of such evil stuff.

Question: How does he pronounce his name? Is it Job as in working or as in the Bible character?

I'm means "I am" and that means you're doomed! Everyone who says "I am" is doomed

Well, that's it then... We're all going to die!!!!

In fact, it's already proven... Everybody who ever said "I am" or "I'm" from the beginning of time to 130 years ago is DEAD!!!!!! And we can project that fact into the present and the future! In 130 years from now, we'll all be dead too! And it's just because of those two little words!!!

All is lost!!!

Yes, if he were a woman he would have spoken up by now.

Which reminds me... I can tell you're a man, too. Wanna know how?

Because it's just like a man to name himself after the largest instrument of measurement.

Besides, if you were a woman, you would have named yourself "Ruler."

:-)

WHY IS MY TAGLINE FIELD SHOWING UP YELLOW?! I'm tired of asking this question. Someone needs to answer so I can get back to work!

The way to get around that is to buy an in-dash auto CD player that supports MP3s. They're not very expensive now, and they're just now coming out with DVD-ROMs that play MP3s as well.

If you cut the bandwidth down, you can get an astounding amount of audio on a single CD. I've got a BBC radio play of Lord of the Rings (all three books) that has 13 one hour episodes on a single CD. And for music, you can easily get about 7 hours on a single 700MB CD. Imagine how much you could get on a dual layer DVD! Mark

Nitz - that one's been in the back of my head for three years waiting for the right thread.

Sadly - you know I'm being serious ;)

Oh, lucky me. I'm glad I was here to experience the moment. :-)

Now, tell me why this #$&% tagline turns yellow sometimes when I'm posting!

Ahem. He's making a play on Descarte's "I think, therefore I am." No Scripture involved, fella.
