Democrats keep up with Republican opponents in campaign fund raising Associated Press
AUSTIN (AP) Texas' Democratic incumbents kept pace last quarter with the fund-raising efforts of their Republican challengers in congressional districts that were redrawn last year to favor the GOP.
Republican leaders engineered the redistricting effort to eliminate a half-dozen incumbent Democrats from Congress. Five of the Democratic incumbents will be on the November ballot facing Republican challengers.
The five Democrats raised a total of $3.08 million in the quarter ending June 30, compared to their Republican challengers, who raised $3.12 million.
"This really shows that the Republicans have had a hard time fund-raising here, harder than may have been expected," said Greg Speed, spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Calls to the National Republican Congressional Committee and the Republican Party of Texas were not immediately returned to The Associated Press on Friday.
The Democrats trailed in cash on hand, with $3.97 million, compared to $4.76 million in Republican war chests.
Reps. Martin Frost of Dallas and Nick Lampson of Houston, both Democrats, raised more than their Republican challengers, Rep. Pete Sessions and former Houston judge Ted Poe.
Sessions campaign pointed out earlier this week that it is "well ahead of Martin Frost in the critical category of cash on hand." Sessions had more than $2.5 million cash on hand, compared to Frost's $1.6 million.
Democrat Reps. Chet Edwards of Waco, Max Sandlin of Marshall and Lampson each have more cash on hand than their Republican counterparts.
In May, Vice President Dick Cheney attended fundraisers for three Republican challengers Poe, state Rep. Arlene Wohlgemuth, who is opposing Edwards, and Louie Gohmert, a former judge from Tyler opposing Sandlin.
Republicans plan to line up more big names to Texas to shore up fund-raising efforts.
From the Austin Pravda today:
In Texas' other battle of incumbents, first-term Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Lub- bock, has $1 million, a $300,000 advantage over Stenholm.
The difference may not make much of a difference in West Texas' inexpensive media market, Jillson said. "They both have enough money to do what needs to be done," he said.
Texas politics ping
The RATS can raise however many $$$ they want but in the end the only thing that pays off is which box the voter checks.
Helloooo. Any moron of a political reporter would know that incumbents almost ALWAYS have fat leads over their challengers in fund-raising. The story here is the exact opposite of the lead -- that the challengers have kept pace with the incumbents.
And BTW, this writer's editor is also bigoted for not catching the same point before this went out the door.

Must be a slow news day in Texas.
Reps. Martin Frost of Dallas and Nick Lampson of Houston, both Democrats, raised more than their Republican challengers, Rep. Pete Sessions and former Houston judge Ted Poe.

I know, right? It's hard to see how they can write this stuff with a straight face.
