Major US Christian Denomination Backs Divestment From Israel 00:22 Jul 16, '04 / 27 Tammuz 5764

Leaders of the largest Christian Presbyterian denomination have officially equated Israel with apartheid-era South Africa and voted to divest from Israel, according to a report in the New York Forward.

The decision by the Presbyterian Church was approved 431 to 62 in a vote at the 216th annual General Assembly of the church, which has a membership of 3 million and a foundation and pension fund of $7 billion.

According to the Forward, the Protestant group is the largest organization or institution to join the divestment campaign against Israel. They are also the first Christian denomination to join the divestment campaign being waged on campuses and elsewhere against the Jewish State. The church also voted to continue funding "messianic congregations," which target Jews for conversion.

At an international interfaith meeting in Buenos Aires last week, Roman Catholic officials signed a document that called for "the total rejection of anti-Semitism in all its forms, including anti-Zionism as a more recent manifestation equated anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism.”

The Anti-Defamation League condemned the Presbyterian decision. “We were offended and distressed by the actions of the Presbyterian Church USA at your most recent General Assembly pertaining to Jews and Israel.” said ADL director Abraham Foxman. “Specifically, we cite the vote to continue funding the Avodat Yisrael Church [a church in Philadelphia that targets Jews for proselytization –ed.], and other missionizing churches targeting Jews, and the "overture" or resolution calling for divestiture from Israel.”

The Presbyterian Assembly also voted overwhelming to condemn Israel's construction of the separation/security fence and to officially disavow Christian Zionism as a legitimate theological stance.

I hope the Jewish leftists in this country ...

They don't care. Their religion is DemocraticSocialism with a little Judaism mixed in for nostalgia. They do not represent the future of the Jewish people because, by and large (there are exceptions, largely due to personal ties to Israel), their children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren will not be Jews.

Well, I never much cared for Presbyterians anyway, so now I have another reason...

I would not lump them all together if I were you. Coral Ridge Ministries with Dr. D.James Kennedy...founder of Knox Theological Seminary, Center for Reclaiming America, Center for Christian Statesmanship, Evangelism Explosion, and the Alliance Defense Fund, which underwrites strategic religious liberty, traditional values, and sanctity of life-related lawsuits. His is just one of many churches in this branch of the Presbyterian denomination that think, believe and act this way.

This is OUTRAGEOUS, but par for the course for theologically revisionist, liberal-livered Calvinists!!!!

Our Lutheran Church In America's mis-leaders, who have not gone as far (yet) as the Presbies, still embrace the "Palestinian" cause, along with their "partner" "Palestinian" Lutheran church on the West Bank, whose bishop literally dances around with Arafat. The same mis-leaders also went along with the general liberal vendetta against the Serbs in the 1990s, portraying the "Bosniak" and "Kosovar" muslims as "victims" of the Serbs.

Both policies are very consistent. Arafat and the leaders of muslim "Bosnia" and "Kosova" are disciples of Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem from the WWII era to the 1970s. The Mufti was a Nazi associate of Hitler, who helped murder hundreds of thousands of Jews, Serbs, Roma, and others during WWII!!!! After the war, the Mufti organized the Arab opposition to Israel, calling for the extermination of the Jews once again!!!!!

NO Christian church has ANY business backing islamoNazis and their policies, or serving as islamoNazi SHILLS by spreading their lies!!!!!

"But I told my son (and wife and the group) that what some elitest liberal leaders think and do doesn't change the way I feel about MY church and the brothers and sisters in that church."

Praise God for men like you who are there for their brothers and sisters in times like these.

Ummmm...because we don't want to be proselytized to? You can support Isdrael without throwing that in, you know.

Come on my friend! There are many Jews who are receptive to Christ's message. I've spoken to many of them.

If they reject it, that is their choice. But I hardly think it is wrong for me to discuss the issue.

The OLCA is a liberal church. I'm a member of the Missouri Synod, and it's more conservative and old-school.

I suspect that it's the result of all those draft dodgers who infested the seminaries during the '60s. Am I right?

They certainly were the first wave.

The seminaries became a home and a launching pad for the homosexuals and America haters.

For a real eye opener go to a seminary to interview for a pending opening. Even 11 years ago it was a shocker.

Can anyone explain to me why so many Jews hate GWB, when he clearly is so supportive of Israel?

Well, let us hope they find more profitable and satisfying investment targets for their funds. Any other reaction to their investment practices would be unseemly, IMHO. After all, who is there to tell them where they should or should not invest their money? In the history of communist societies there were times of coercive "investment" into government debt. I'd say it is an example from which one should keep as far away as possible.

It's wrong if that is your agenda behind your support of Israel.

And I'm willing to be that the ones who are most receptive are Jews who were raised in secular to not too observant homes. Which is why I am all for high observance.

That said, it's almost Shabbat. See you later.

Look for a Southern Baptist affiliated church. We still believe in the literal truth of the bible, every last word of it.

Our particular church has Wednesday night bible studies and one that is popular and given a couple of times a year is "Discovering Your Jewish Roots" which, as you indicate explore the roots of Jewish faith and many Jewish traditions. The knowledge of Jewish traditions makes the depth of Jesus's and Paul's words practically jump off the page with new understanding.

Take a look at the website, I think it is pretty good for a "little church in the country". Gladeville Baptist Church We were a little church 12 years ago with an average Sunday attendance of about 200 and now we have an average attendance of about 750 to 900 and membership of about 2000.

I am suddenly ashamed to have Scots ancestry.

Don't be. These people bear about as much resemblance to the original beliefs of Scots Presbyterianism as Whoopi Goldberg does to Grace Kelly.

A visit to their web site is a nauseating experience. A veritable litany of liberal causes, almost none of which have anything to do with the worship of God. I read for thirty minutes and did not even see His Name mentioned.

John Knox is whirling in his grave.

"Ouch. While most of Protestant Christianity in the US is solidly behind Israel...."

Yep.

"... it seems some liberal Protestants disagree."

That's cause they're spiritually blind. And that's my "polite" assessment.  !

To: Grampa Dave; everyone

On Sunday, a number of conservative members of our Presbyterian congregation will meet to discuss this problem and what to do about it.

Can y'all suggest specific scripture passages to back up the correct position?
