Major US Christian Denomination Backs Divestment From Israel 00:22 Jul 16, '04 / 27 Tammuz 5764

Leaders of the largest Christian Presbyterian denomination have officially equated Israel with apartheid-era South Africa and voted to divest from Israel, according to a report in the New York Forward.

The decision by the Presbyterian Church was approved 431 to 62 in a vote at the 216th annual General Assembly of the church, which has a membership of 3 million and a foundation and pension fund of $7 billion.

According to the Forward, the Protestant group is the largest organization or institution to join the divestment campaign against Israel. They are also the first Christian denomination to join the divestment campaign being waged on campuses and elsewhere against the Jewish State. The church also voted to continue funding "messianic congregations," which target Jews for conversion.

At an international interfaith meeting in Buenos Aires last week, Roman Catholic officials signed a document that called for "the total rejection of anti-Semitism in all its forms, including anti-Zionism as a more recent manifestation equated anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism.”

The Anti-Defamation League condemned the Presbyterian decision. “We were offended and distressed by the actions of the Presbyterian Church USA at your most recent General Assembly pertaining to Jews and Israel.” said ADL director Abraham Foxman. “Specifically, we cite the vote to continue funding the Avodat Yisrael Church [a church in Philadelphia that targets Jews for proselytization –ed.], and other missionizing churches targeting Jews, and the "overture" or resolution calling for divestiture from Israel.”

The Presbyterian Assembly also voted overwhelming to condemn Israel's construction of the separation/security fence and to officially disavow Christian Zionism as a legitimate theological stance.

The Lord is my God. Christ is my Savior. But I don't go to church anymore, just because of this kind of insanity. Satan is in the church.

The decision by the Presbyterian Church was approved 431 to 62 in a vote...

One of my editors at work is a Presbyterian minister. He literally holds Israel in contempt because he claims Palestinians are really a peace loving people but that Israel is not allowing them to be free, or something like that.

Of course this editor is also a rabid Democratic socialist who despises President Bush for being a "religious conservative."

In that vein, to this day, I cannot understand how Jews in America still stay beholden to the Democratic party when it is that Democratic party which harbors the people who detest all things Israel, all things Jewish.

And I cannot understand why this editor, supposedly a man of the cloth, believes that America fully support and accept gay marriage or it is sinning, or why he views abortion-on-demand as a badge of honor.

She must live up in the western conference...The Methodist General Conference voted against accepting homosexual ministers and the west is defying the vote.

I live in Texas where the Liberal Social activist part of the church seems foreign...

Pray for our churches...There is much to correct.

Dont look for ANY mainline Protestant church to Support Israel. God left those churches long ago.

Whaa...!?

I grew up a Baptist, and I can tell you from first hand my church (in Pennsylvania) has always been a steadfast, ardent supporter of all things Israel, almost (correctly) to the point of fanaticism.

As one radio commentator said a few months ago on the Laura Ingraham radio show, "America's Bible Belt IS Israel's Safety Belt."

And somehow I don't think the Bible Belt in the South, MidWest, Plain States and West are all Catholic or whatever. Many if not most are some Protestant denomination, whatever that means.

While most of Protestant Christianity in the US is solidly behind Israel, it seems some liberal Protestans disagree.

Apparently, they disagree with God who said that Israel was to be given to the sons of Abraham forever.

Thjey disagree with the Creator on almost everything. My wife just wrote to the Lutherans to remove her name from the membership rolls of their misguided organization. I haven't darkened the door of the Methodists in so long that I am sure if I asked to be removed, it would only confuse them and perhaps bring a call for money to support them.

With the internet we are studying the Jewish roots of the faith and supporting Israel and Zionism. Even as in our remote area with only mainstream liberal churches to attend one can still find truth. Local Bible study groups are a way to input the truth to pastors and membership. But all our tithes and offerings go to supporters of Israel over the internet. No money for false doctrines and liberal lunatics.

"I hope the Jewish leftists in this country start to realize that the only Christians who are actively trying to get the Jews in Israel killed are their fellow leftists pretending to be Christians under a "progressive" banner. It is high time the Jews dumped the Democrat Party."

It is a two way street. The Jino Leftists hate Israel even more than the Cinos you describe above. Both groups are despicable and vile.

Dan....it's ok. You had great reason for guessing UMC. I had read the presbyusa results last week and knew they'd gone in the direction of divestment on this issue.

But I am baffled by the condemnation of any effort to proselytize Christianity among Jews.

Ummmm...because we don't want to be proselytized to? You can support Isdrael without throwing that in, you know.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if UC Irvine plays a big role in that.

That's why I don't belong to a denominational church anymore. Having to kowtow to a presbytery or to a church hierarchy isn't my cup of tea. I love good and godly leadership and you don't often find it anymore in the liberal churches. Too much PC for lil ole me. Sad, huh? We used to have respectable and godly leaders in our churches.

Satan is everywhere, dear Freeper. But he has no power except what we give him. WE have more power than he does but most people aren't aware of it. With Christ in our lives, we win over that enemy every time. We just need to learn how. Don't give up on all the churches. There ARE some good ones out there.

Ouch. While most of Protestant Christianity in the US is solidly behind Israel, it seems some liberal Protestans disagree.

Actually, they are NOT Christians. NO Christian Church would do what this Church just did!! I hope ANY TRUE Christian who attends the Presbyterian Church will leave immediately and find a Church who KNOWS AND FOLLOWS what the Bible teaches about a Christian's relationship to the Jews and Israel. Jesus IS THE KING of the Jews, and just because they don't like it doesn't change the Word of God. It looks like the great Apostasy is right on target. It's Bible Prophesy coming true.

"This is one of the dangers of Replacement Theology. Hatred of the Jews and Israel is a sign of Apostasy."

You can almost use this one question to decide whether a Christian Church is a good one or not. Just ask the Pastor if they hold to the belief that "The Land" belongs to Israel. If he/they say "yes" it is pretty sure to be a good church Biblically.

This is but one liberal denomination among many who call themselves Presbyterian.

You have hit the nail squarely on the head. This is not the "D.James Kennedy, Coral Ridge Ministry" Presbyterians. This is the branch that has the gay and lesbian pastors and performs same-sex marriages and are doing some other weird stuff with the U.N. etc... These are definitely not the John Knox Presbyterians!
