A WWS Exclusive Article
Note from the Editors: You are about to read an account of what happened during a domestic flight that one of our writers, Annie Jacobsen, took from Detroit to Los Angeles. The WWS Editorial Team debated long and hard about how to handle this information and ultimately we decided it was something that should be shared. What does it have to do with finances? Nothing, and everything. Here is Annie's story.
On June 29, 2004, at 12:28 p.m., I flew on Northwest Airlines flight #327 from Detroit to Los Angeles with my husband and our young son. Also on our flight were 14 Middle Eastern men between the ages of approximately 20 and 50 years old. What I experienced during that flight has caused me to question whether the United States of America can realistically uphold the civil liberties of every individual, even non-citizens, and protect its citizens from terrorist threats.
On that Tuesday, our journey began uneventfully. Starting out that morning in Providence, Rhode Island, we went through security screening, flew to Detroit, and passed the time waiting for our connecting flight to Los Angeles by shopping at the airport stores and eating lunch at an airport diner. With no second security check required in Detroit we headed to our gate and waited for the pre-boarding announcement. Standing near us, also waiting to pre-board, was a group of six Middle Eastern men. They were carrying blue passports with Arabic writing. Two men wore tracksuits with Arabic writing across the back. Two carried musical instrument cases thin, flat, 18" long. One wore a yellow T-shirt and held a McDonald's bag. And the sixth man had a bad leg -- he wore an orthopedic shoe and limped. When the pre-boarding announcement was made, we handed our tickets to the Northwest Airlines agent, and walked down the jetway with the group of men directly behind us.
My four-year-old son was determined to wheel his carry-on bag himself, so I turned to the men behind me and said, "You go ahead, this could be awhile." "No, you go ahead," one of the men replied. He smiled pleasantly and extended his arm for me to pass. He was young, maybe late 20's and had a goatee. I thanked him and we boarded the plan.
Once on the plane, we took our seats in coach (seats 17A, 17B and 17C). The man with the yellow shirt and the McDonald's bag sat across the aisle from us (in seat 17E). The pleasant man with the goatee sat a few rows back and across the aisle from us (in seat 21E). The rest of the men were seated throughout the plane, and several made their way to the back.

umm... if you say you are armed on flights id like to know what you mean. i asked what you mean and you demurred. there are lots of critisisms in this thread about ppl "not doing anything". im not gonna ignore a poster in a news group who boasts he flies armed.
I have heard back from my source at LAXPD...he said the story is indeed true, and there is a lot more than what was in the article.

TERROR IN THE SKIES III
By Michelle Malkin · July 16, 2004 03:05 PM
I have been speaking with Brendi Rawlin of Porter Novelli (PR rep for Womens Wall Street). According to Brendi, the Washington Post has been sitting on the true story of Annie Jacobsen's "Terror in the Skies" account since last Friday. Dave Adams, the air marshal's spokesman, not only confirmed the story, but has also apparently supplied witness statements and other corroborations of Jacobsen's account. NBC Nightly News, ABC, and Dateline NBC are now on the story as well.

jock ewing said that.
ok.. you didnt boast (though you did boast) that you fly armed. you said you fly armed. how so?
"Yep. Even the writer stayed on the flight. I guess she wasn't too concerned."
Yeah, heck, if she wanted to get off, all she had to do was open the emergency exit and jump out, right?
Your thinking cap is not on today, apparently...
A copy of the Enquirer works well.
I STILL am fully behind the idea of widely installing sausage meats and bacon on EVERY FLIGHT in Plain view with the Attendants getting up and saying "All Emergency exits are fully equipped with bacon and sausage packages for easier sliding on the way out! In fact, every emergency slide has been liberally greased down with bacon grease and ready for access in case of emergencies!

3:24pm. Just got off the phone with Annie Jacobsen. She has been writing business reports and articles for WomensWallStreet.com and print magazines for the past two years. Recounting the flight, she told me "My legs were like rubber...It was four and a half hours of terror." She is working on a follow-up story for WomensWallStreet.com on Monday and will appear on NBC Nightly News Monday night. I asked how she felt about suspicions that her story had been a hoax. She hadn't heard of these suspicions and instead has been hearing overwhelming corroboration of her experience in thousands of e-mails, many from pilots and flight attendants reporting similar incidents.
She has been shocked that "for whatever reason, the story didn't develop" in the mainstream media.
I took off my journalist's hat and told her I thought she was a patriot for bringing the story to light.
Now, I want to know why John Mintz and the editors of the Washington Post have deemed Annie Jacobsen's story unfit to print.
I've advocated handing out ketchup-sized packets of lard to each passenger. ;)
Next time, I won't bow to PC, however.
And here's another take:
Read Gavin DeBeckers book "Gift of Fear". I personally think it should be required reading for every woman alive.
An amazing story. I can't get on an airplane these days without a complete review of my life and a thorough examination of every item in my bags. But I am a middle aged white male. Definitely a threat.

The 14 Syrians had been hired as musicians to play at a casino in the desert.
-snip-
the 14 men traveled on Northwest Airlines flight #327 using one-way tickets.
-snip-
Two days later they were scheduled to fly back on jetBlue from Long Beach, California to New York -- also using one-way tickets.
She was concerned BEFORE the flight even took off. My cap is just fine.
Prior to takeoff she's in her seat and watches 2 groups of suspicious Syrians board and take their seats. 6 together and 8 individually. 1 of them in seat 1A right behind the cockpit. And you wouldn't be suspicious? Do you work for the TSA? Or are you a member of the ACLU?
