My daughter-in-law has a sister in a California college.
Recently, the sister attending college, said that her boyfriend had received a notice to register for the draft.
I know that Congress has passed nothing to reinstate the draft and that the main two sponsors of the resolutions for draft are both Democrats ( Rangel in the House and Fritz Hollings in the Senate).
Is it possible that individual states are sending notices to register for the draft?
My initial thought is that there could be someone forging the draft registration notices to scare the young voters and college crowd.

I wasn't aware of this and I've been in California for over 20 years and never heard of any young men in this area registering for the draft.
My son went directly from high school into the Air Force and served in the first Gulf War, but none of his friends registered for the draft.
Selective Service notice. Duh!
Susannah, they had to have registered with the selective service. If they did not, they cannot get any federal job, get any student loans, and alot of other stuff I can't remember. (It's late) If these guys didn't register with the Selective Service, I am pretty sure they are ineligible to vote and will remain that way.
That's because Rangle and Conyers wouldn't know a soldier or sailor if one stomped their ass.
I bet your son's friends registered.

Personaly I do not support the draft most likly because I have a 15 year old son, My daughter is already in the Army now, But the talk I hear from everyone is they are leaving the military as soon as the stop loss is over.
Turk, thanks for your response. I know the Army needs people. they are getting them. From recruitments, and sister services, the Army is getting the numbers it needs.
I oppose the draft because I have had some kids who voluteered and then got themselves into trouble. They were a bear to work with and a bear to get seperated. I would not want to have a bunch of whiners under my watch.

Volunteer soldiers are the best. Those kept past their retirement date should at least be getting hazard pay and whatever else from the minute they are recalled to the time they are let go. At the LEAST.
I don't think they needed the draft in WW2, voluntary enlistments were very high. and it was a World War. They should raise the pay, that might help.

I think nuggler was refering to the Korean war.
Those born in the late 60's and early 70's were a product of the mindset of the Vietnam war. The selective service, as far as I know, started back up during Carter's time in office.
But, I could be wrong.
GeronL, the draft was very neccesary in WWII. The casualties on both sides were extraordinary.
We has a multitude of volunteers, but the draft was a needed tool at that time.
An officer told me once that if a deserter wasn't "too" much of a problem for the community he was hiding out in,then they didn't want to waste their time with the nogood because they were worse than worthless to the military while the War was going and they'd be caught and settled with after the War.
