While the Vietnam War was on,at least some deserters were not hunted by the military even when their location was known.

An officer told me once that if a deserter wasn't "too" much of a problem for the community he was hiding out in,then they didn't want to waste their time with the nogood because they were worse than worthless to the military while the War was going and they'd be caught and settled with after the War.
