WASHINGTON, July 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence United with the Million Mom March:
There are only 13 days left when Congress is in session before the expiration of the Assault Weapons Ban -- a law that President Bush pledged he'd renew as a candidate for President in 2000.
Among the many dangerous outcomes of the sunset of the ban is this: In 35 states, the laws governing citizens carrying concealed weapons have been loosened to a ridiculous standard, with police forced to issue concealed handgun permits to virtually anyone who does not have a felony conviction. In many of those states, hidden handguns are allowed in public places like restaurants, bars, sports arenas, supermarkets and even places of worship.
That means that if the assault weapons ban expires, a banned weapon like the Tec-9 assault pistol, equipped with a 36- or 50- round magazine, could be legally carried, concealed, into many workplaces and popular establishments crowded with people.
Some states with extremely weak concealed weapons laws have banned carrying concealed weapons in school. Some have banned them at sporting events, and others have banned them where alcohol is served.
But other states don't exclude sensible public places in their laws. In Oregon, New Hampshire and Utah, a loaded Tec-9 could legally be carried into an elementary school or high school -- just as a 38-caliber revolver can be now. In Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia, or Colorado, a Tec-9 could be taken legally into a church or temple.
THE TEC-9: CONCEALABLE MAYHEM
Here's what one online gun information source says:
"The Intratec TEC DC-9 "assault pistol", also known as DC-9, TEC-9, or, if manufactured after 1994, as AB-10, bears the dubious distinction of being one of the most widely used "criminal" guns in USA. It was used in several mass murder cases, as well as in unknown, but definitely large number of street fights and other violent crimes. TEC-9 became "famous" for its "evil" appearance, large magazine capacity (which offered significant firepower), and for low price. Unsurprisingly, these features made TEC-9 very popular among various marginal types." (See http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg136-e.htm.)
STATES WITH MANDATORY CCW LAWS
In 35 states, police are forced to allow practically all non- felons to carry concealed handguns in public. These lenient laws, called "non-discretionary" or "shall issue" CCW laws, force law enforcement to issue concealed handgun permits to virtually anyone who does not have a felony conviction (Alaska and Vermont do not even require a permit to carry a concealed handgun).
In many states, the permit requirements are so minimal that some people get permits to carry concealed weapons despite criminal convictions for violent or drug-related misdemeanors or domestic violence restraining orders. The applicant does not have to show any need for carrying a hidden handgun and law enforcement has no discretion to deny permits even if they think public safety may be endangered, absent a prohibiting offense. Some of these states do not even require safety training and force police to issue permits to people as young as 18. The 35 states are: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
SOME OF THE RESULTS OF WEAKENED CONCEALED WEAPONS LAWS
-- A Georgia woman was arrested after pointing her concealed handgun at another mother during an argument over their eleven- year-old daughter's basketball game at school;
-- A Michigan man was arrested for threatening to shoot two other men with his concealed handgun during a dispute over clearing trash off his property;
-- A Virginia man was arrested for carrying a concealed handgun into an elementary school, where it was left in an unattended backpack in the classroom until a teacher noticed it;
-- An Alabama man accidentally shot himself and a bystander in a movie theater showing "102 Dalmatians," when the concealed handgun fell out of his pocket;
-- A Pennsylvania man shot and killed a neighbor with a concealed handgun during an argument over where to dump snow that was being shoveled off the property.

The fallacy of most (all, other than penalty enhancements) gun laws.
The Brady's should spend their money supporting Eddie Eagle, and save lives.
I thought she was way past do for that, maybe everybody should send her some cartons of cigs to console her on the end of the ban.
Here in Arizona, it is legal to carry an AR-15, AKM, etc. (pre- or postban) IN A NON-THREATENING MANNER. Although, I've not seen one EVER as an open carry weapon, it sure would turn some heads.
What would the mode of carry be? Slung in some manner? Australian carry? Giles tactical sling? The fact that I'm asking in a well armed open carry State, puts the lie to the Brady Bunch's mad ravings.
A former girlfriend who lives just outside of Atlanta was home alone when a man began pounding loudly on her front door, shouting that her car was about to be towed. As she was approaching the front door, one of the man's accomplisses was coming into her house via a back window, which she barely saw in time to pull her 9mm. The sound of the 9's action also seemed to chase away the man at her front door.
Then she had to wait 15 minutes for the cops to respond to her belated phone call (not really a bad response time, but lots of bad can happen in that amount of time).
Oh, and she didn't even have a car at the time. As you no doubt surmised, it was merely a ruse to distract her while her home was being broken into.
12 Legislative Days Left Until The AWB Expires
Like 50 caliber, still illegal for a Chicago LEO to own (I think). Blackpowder. In a shotgun or blackpowder deer hunting state. Go figure.
I registered to respond to this. Carefully note that no assertion is made by Handgun Confiscation, Inc A/K/A Brady Center to Confiscate all Guns, that any of the people cited actually had a concealed carry permit.
And John Lott assures us that any discussion of the costs of some activity that excludes the benefits is a fraud, and this is a certifiable fraud because of that omission.
The benefits of concealed carry clearly outweigh the costs, the benefits of gun ownership clearly outweigh the costs.
And note well that since the 1995 federal gun ban in schools that one mass murder spree after another has taken place in our schools. When a perfect killing ground is created by law, it draws those to it with a murderous intent.
It is unlawful under Federal law, to take any weapons into a postal facility. These places of mass murder have created a new saying in the national lingo "going postal".
Anything coming from the mouth of a gun confiscation advocate is a deception, if not outright lie.

"(W)hen the owner called in the checks, it seemed to me he spoke unnecessarily loudly, repeating and spelling my name over and over on the phone...Scott is not a convicted felon, and he is not prohibited from owning a gun...Scott Brady could walk into a store and buy a - he is not a prohibited purchaser

"Because less than twenty years ago I was the target of a terrorist group...I know the sense of helplessness that people feel. I know the urge to arm yourself because that's what I did. I was trained in firearms...I carried a concealed weapon. I made the determination that if somebody was going to try to take me out, I was going to take them with me."
Senator Dianne Feinstein
IIRC, in this incident, the guy carrying concealed was an off-duty POLICE OFFICER. I seem to recall that a thread was posted to FR last year on this particular incident.
In any event, as one of those "evil" concealed carry permit holders, I usually carry openly anyway. But the CCW does mean that after I fill out the BATF form 4479, I can just display my CCW and my gun guy doesn't have to run another background check on me ..... :)

"The Era of Osama lasted about an hour, from the time the first plane hit the tower to the moment the General Militia of Flight 93 reported for duty."
Toward FREEDOM
True only if the Brady's are interested in saving lives. But we both know that's just a pretext ...
"..Will they be leaping off of buildings come September?"
Why do the words "trap and skeet" immediately come to mind?
Oh, no!!! The HUMANITY!!!(/sarcasm)
Hey, I never thought of that, I'll have to look at them at the next Gun show after the AWB sunsets!
Seriously, if such a firearm were carried by someone who had gone through the local & FBI criminal background check to get a concealed weapons permit, I wouldn't have a problem with it.
The people who have concealed weapons permits are not the problem with US gun violence!
The lawabiding people who follow gun laws, are not the problem with US gun violence.
The problem with US gun violence is that it is for the most part committed by criminals who pay little mind to the existing laws or the laws that Brady, et. al. would like to have on the books.
Nuff said...
Welcome to FR.
You're right, even from a perspective of one (not me) willling to cede to government the ability to control non-criminal gun ownership. Factor in the "benefits" of Freedom, there's nothing to discuss.
Better yet, the two Johns will have to bite their tongues on this issue.
Thanks NRA! I'll likely ignore the FR NRA dissenters.
Well, wouldn't you need all that ammo only in a crowded room? I mean if you have to keep reloading, some of them might get to you. ;-)
Congress has adjourned for today
Not yet, Ron Paul is up right now being isolationist and wanting to 'avoid foreign entanglements'.
I was going to suggest a campaign to send these people new panties (to replace the ones that they soil every day thinking about "hidden handguns"), but we've already seen that panties can be responsible for irrational fear and incoherent babbling as well.
Thanks for the welcome to FR.
Now, how many of you have seen various attacks on the .50 caliber target rifle in the media of late? At least one California community is attempting to 'ban' the .50 caliber.
Note well that NOT ONE INSTANCE OF THESE HIGHLY EXPENSIVE TARGET RIFLES HAS EVER BEEN USED IN THE COMMISSION OF A CRIME!
That is correct, zero criminal activity, and a very well coordinated effort to ban a target rifle. So, ask yourself what is really going on with the so called gun control or misnamed gun safety groups. With zero criminal usage, 100% lawful usage, and a nationwide effort to ban, what is the real objective?
MAKE NO MISTAKE, THEY WANT TO TAKE AWAY THE RIGHT AND MEANS OF SELF DEFENSE. incrementally.
Easy for him to say, right now is tomorrow in Iraq :>)
