Tec-9 Terror: 35 States Face Added Risk: Legal, Concealed Assault Weapons in Public Places

WASHINGTON, July 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence United with the Million Mom March:

There are only 13 days left when Congress is in session before the expiration of the Assault Weapons Ban -- a law that President Bush pledged he'd renew as a candidate for President in 2000.

Among the many dangerous outcomes of the sunset of the ban is this: In 35 states, the laws governing citizens carrying concealed weapons have been loosened to a ridiculous standard, with police forced to issue concealed handgun permits to virtually anyone who does not have a felony conviction. In many of those states, hidden handguns are allowed in public places like restaurants, bars, sports arenas, supermarkets and even places of worship.

That means that if the assault weapons ban expires, a banned weapon like the Tec-9 assault pistol, equipped with a 36- or 50- round magazine, could be legally carried, concealed, into many workplaces and popular establishments crowded with people.

Some states with extremely weak concealed weapons laws have banned carrying concealed weapons in school. Some have banned them at sporting events, and others have banned them where alcohol is served.

But other states don't exclude sensible public places in their laws. In Oregon, New Hampshire and Utah, a loaded Tec-9 could legally be carried into an elementary school or high school -- just as a 38-caliber revolver can be now. In Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Washington and West Virginia, or Colorado, a Tec-9 could be taken legally into a church or temple.

THE TEC-9: CONCEALABLE MAYHEM

Here's what one online gun information source says:

"The Intratec TEC DC-9 "assault pistol", also known as DC-9, TEC-9, or, if manufactured after 1994, as AB-10, bears the dubious distinction of being one of the most widely used "criminal" guns in USA. It was used in several mass murder cases, as well as in unknown, but definitely large number of street fights and other violent crimes. TEC-9 became "famous" for its "evil" appearance, large magazine capacity (which offered significant firepower), and for low price. Unsurprisingly, these features made TEC-9 very popular among various marginal types." (See http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg136-e.htm.)

STATES WITH MANDATORY CCW LAWS

In 35 states, police are forced to allow practically all non- felons to carry concealed handguns in public. These lenient laws, called "non-discretionary" or "shall issue" CCW laws, force law enforcement to issue concealed handgun permits to virtually anyone who does not have a felony conviction (Alaska and Vermont do not even require a permit to carry a concealed handgun).

In many states, the permit requirements are so minimal that some people get permits to carry concealed weapons despite criminal convictions for violent or drug-related misdemeanors or domestic violence restraining orders. The applicant does not have to show any need for carrying a hidden handgun and law enforcement has no discretion to deny permits even if they think public safety may be endangered, absent a prohibiting offense. Some of these states do not even require safety training and force police to issue permits to people as young as 18. The 35 states are: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

SOME OF THE RESULTS OF WEAKENED CONCEALED WEAPONS LAWS

-- A Georgia woman was arrested after pointing her concealed handgun at another mother during an argument over their eleven- year-old daughter's basketball game at school;

-- A Michigan man was arrested for threatening to shoot two other men with his concealed handgun during a dispute over clearing trash off his property;

-- A Virginia man was arrested for carrying a concealed handgun into an elementary school, where it was left in an unattended backpack in the classroom until a teacher noticed it;

-- An Alabama man accidentally shot himself and a bystander in a movie theater showing "102 Dalmatians," when the concealed handgun fell out of his pocket;

-- A Pennsylvania man shot and killed a neighbor with a concealed handgun during an argument over where to dump snow that was being shoveled off the property.

Congress has adjourned for today, thus, there are only 12 Legislative Days Left Until The AWB Expires

Yup, a very peaceful Friday night in most urban areas. Saving folk, that's the government's job.

The 102 Dalmations guy, I can't believe no one posted that.

Remarkable demonstration that logic should only be practiced by licensed professionals. This might require a trip to the Logic Emergency Room.

Does that mean you won't be taking it to 101 Dalmations.

So it is the President's job to hold the hand of the Congress to make sure a piece of largely ignored legislation gets reenacted?

Wonderful...the propaganda machine continues to churn....

I know you just post this crap for giggles, but let's not take them too seriously.

The Brady Campaign numbers around 9 people total. They'll only have 8 when Sarah finally croaks.

Notice that only in one case did anything actually HAPPEN! And it's arguable that in that case, anyone stupid enough to shoot someone over something that inane is a threat to society with or without a handgun.

Besides, if these are the most heinous incidents that have occurred as the direct result of "weakened" concealed carry laws, it's certainly a price I'm willing to pay.

Let's see, where can I start:
  1. The AW Ban has no effect on the ability to carry a Tec-9 concealed. The AWB only stopped the continued SALE of certain firearms and magazines manufactored after the date the AWB took effect
  2. The Tec-9 is a lousy crime gun. It's cheaply made and jams easily. The only thing going for it is its appearance
  3. The list of offenses commited by CCW holders is insignificant. You can bet the house that Brady printed EVERY significant offense they ever heard of over the last umpteen years. If this is all they got, then CCW holders have a lower rate of gun crime than cops do (a significant number of cops are arrested each year for crimes including armed robbery, murdering witnesses for the benefit of drug gangs, etc)

Psssssst. Mr. Hamm. Take out the word "legally" and you describe a situation no different than the one today. And anyone determined to wreak mayhem in the workplace or popular establishment isn't likely to concern himself with legal niceties anyway.

Would you care to look at what the AWB has NOT done???

Once, when I was on 3rd shift, someone was pounding on my door at 2 in the morning. My wife called me at work, I called the police, then drove home. It took me 35 minutes to get home, it took the police another 2 hours to get there. We live in a LARGE metropolitan area (Seattle). I can't wait for the government to protect me.

If a weapon is either inaccurate or unreliable;
it is pretty much worthless. The TEC-9 is both.
I hate being so negative about it.
Let me try to think up something good to say...
...oh, yeah, here's something...
It is really easy to clear out a jam, which is good
because you need to do it 3 or 4 times per magazine.

I also have a TEC-22, and it is equally inaccurate,
but a more reliable weapon than the 9.

If a weapon is either inaccurate or has no stopping power;
it is pretty worthless. The TEC-22 is both.
