Pornography is tearing apart the very fabric of our society.

Wrong: it's a symptom of the very fabric of our society falling apart. The author's entire thesis is backwards.

...If it appeals to the prurient interest, is patently offensive, and lacks serious value (artistically, etc.) then the material is considered obscene and is illegal...

According to these basic 'tests,' homosexuals could be considered 'obscene.'

(hmmmm?)

Citing Cass Sunstein undermines the article. It would be as good to cite Stalin, as far as I am concerned. He could be right on this point, but the author should find someone less loathsome to cite. This guy was required reading at UVA Law, a bastion of conservatism compared to most other elite law schools. That is how bad it is.

Cass Sunstein is a leftist who wrote the following article in the Prospect. He thinks the conservatives are taking over while leftists remain passive and fail to do enough to stop us.

Gee, such harsh words.

I like porn. Porn makes me happy to see my wife when she comes home.

"The current legal definition of obscenity is found in the 1973 case of Miller v. California."

Miller? The only thing about Miller that I remember was something about someone possessing less than 16". Now that's obscene!

(Second amendment inside joke)

This is a free market issue, not a religious one. The only way you can slow the growth of porn (there's no way you can eliminate it entirely) is to educate young people, especially teenagers, and promote traditional values that include men.

Trying to make porn illegal will just cause it to go underground and make it even more nefarious than it already is.

The FCC Act needs to be amended so that the FCC can regulate cable television.

This article can be summed up in five words: We need more government regulation.

Like I've said before, some people must have been asleep in the last century if they still think more government regulation is an answer to anything.

"According to Henry Boatwright (Chairman of the U.S. Advisory Board for Social Concerns), approximately 70 percent of the pornographic magazines sold end up in the hands of minors. Women Against Pornography estimate that about 1.2 million children are annually exploited in commercial sex (child pornography and prostitution)."

Now how can they possibly know that? The WAP's ESTIMATE that 1.2 mil kiddies are involved. Based on what?
Specious and unsupported claims like these make me wince.
I am also increasingly leery of terms like "linked", "has ties with or to", "coupled". and any of the myriad words, terms and phrases that indicate they are basicly guessing with very little empiracal data.
And its not just this issue, btw....

In the mean time, a hearty "So what?" from one of the millions who uses porn and does not rape other men, women or small children.

Thanks for posting this. This scourge of society started A LONG TIME AGO, further than many think. Here's a historical example.

Maria Goretti was born in Anacona, Italy, October 16, 1890. She died in Nettuno, Italy on July 6,1902 following an attempted sexual assault by Ailesandro Serenelli.

Serenelli, aged 19, repeatedly tried to seduce Maria and threatened her with death if she revealed his designs. On July 5, 1902 Maria repulsed his advances and he stabbed her repeatedly with a dagger after she said, “No, God does not wish it. it is a sin. You would go to Hell for it."

Before she died, she forgave her attacker. He was jailed and eventually was converted.

In the book "In Garments All Red," Father Godfrey Poage explains that Allesandro was addicted to pornography. On page 64, Father Poage says, “He went regularly to a newsstand, and came back with a bundle of lurid magazines. He would then lock himself in his room and would not come out the rest of the day. This brooding had an evil effect on him.” In the magazine "Divine Love," a further explanation is given:

"Motor images, started in the mind by viewing such pictures, are almost impossible to control, once they have started. Allesandro admitted that it was such motor images, caused by contemplation of pinup pictures (from magazines), that drove him to murder eleven-year-old Maria, because of her heroic resistance to his advances. He could not control himself."

Later, offering himself as an example to the world, Allesandro stated: “I beg pardon of the world for the outrage I committed against the martyr Maria Goretti, and against purity’. I exhort all to avoid immoral displays, and all dangerous occasions that can lead to sin.”

Maria Goretti became was canonized by Pope Pius XII.

Adult bookstores outnumber McDonald's restaurants in the United States by a margin of at least three to one.

I call b*lls*it.

I would tend to disagree very strongly that pornography actually causes antisocial behavior. I suspect, however, that it might play a role in antisocial behavior by initiating impulses that, in a select (fortunately) few individuals, have no method of being reconciled other than by acting them out. For those individuals, pornography is a very bad thing indeed, especially the violent kind.
