'Oldest' dog heads for 27th birthday [Eats kangaroo and emu]
The Guardian ^ | July 12, 2004 | David Fickling

An Australian mongrel fed on kangaroo and emu could be the oldest dog in the world. A vet in the outback town of Wilcannia has established that Jerry, a red heeler-bull terrier cross, will make it to 189 dog years when he hits 27 in August. Dogs rarely live past their 15th birthday, but Jerry shows little sign of fragility beyond some arthritis and worn teeth. "He is a remarkably solid dog for his age and has not got that wasted look that animals and old people get," the town's RSPCA vet, Honey Nelson, told the Melbourne Herald Sun.

"I think it's partly genetic, but also because he's a fit, roo-hunting dog who used to catch a lot of emu and roo. He could push on to 28."

The oldest dog on record was an Australian cattle dog named Bluey, who died in 1939 at the age of 29.

Jerry's owners, Aboriginal leader Waddie Smith and his wife Aileen, said he was a gentle creature who had never fathered pups.

"Everyone in Wilcannia knows him because he's never hurt anyone, although he does not like cats in the yard - they're his one enemy," said Mr Smith.

"He means a lot to me. He still comes for a bush walk with me. I take him nearly every night and he jumps up and wants to grab me on the arm like when he was younger."

What's a emu and a roo???

See the Australian Coat of Arms...

Kangaroo on left, Emu on right. Emus are the second biggest birds in the world, and like the ostrich, they do not fly.

And kangaroos are herbivores - they do not eat dogs.

You're so kind. (The bottom left-hand corner of the top right-hand state... that's where I live.)

they are not farm animals.

I really don't see your problem. Haven't you ever seen a dog chase a squirrel, or something? (I did, when I lived in Connecticut.)

If you knew where Wilcannia was, you'd know this dog probably had little choice BUT to eat roo.. there's precious little else to be had to eat, out in that desert country.

Where else do you see stuff like this, with interesting and amusing commentary?

The only thing that's come close to making me laugh on this thread is that someone who flies the Illinois State Flag (whose name I have momentarily forgotten, sorry) on their homepage, knows more native animal recipes than I do, and I was born in Australia. :-)

They would proably make better pets than dinner on your plate....

You've obviously never encountered either animal. If your idea of a "pet" is, say, a bucking bronco, then by all means, you're welcome to try... :>)~~~

And what's the record for cats? Must be above 20.

Way above. My great-grandmother had a cat that lived to 22, and I seem to recall that's not even close to the record.

If it's not a carnivore, it's fair game.

I used to give them that weird breakfast cereal that was *supposed* to look/taste like french toast simply because it cracked me up to watch them munching their tiny "sandwiches"....LOL!

You should have put peanut butter between 2 of those french toast cereal pieces and gave the rat an extra treat with his breakfast!
