A Dime's Worth Of Difference? (Liberal Republicans Say "NON!" To Tax Cuts)
OpinionJournal.com ^ | 7/11/04 | Pete Du Pont

An important and serious argument is going on in Washington about whether taxes on Americans' incomes should stay where they are or dramatically rise, and whether government spending should continue its accelerating growth. We know what Democrats think. They despise tax cuts and believe government spending should be higher. Washington Republicans, on the other hand, are unsure of themselves. They used to be for lower taxes and smaller government; now they seem to want bigger spending even if it means higher taxes, abandoning Reagan conservatism for '60s liberalism. In other words, this is a battle for the heart of the Republican Party; the outcome matters, and it seems to be in doubt. With the help of three liberal Republicans (Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine and Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island), and one who should know better (John McCain of Arizona), the Senate, with 51 votes, adopted a rule that if passed in the House will end all the Bush tax cuts and ensure that no new ones are enacted.

Too bad!

You want to discuss the issues, or defend the indefensible? Make up your mind.

I dropped the damn Posse-matic in the bathtub...it was the far inferior 4000 series (no waterproofing).

I really gotta get some sleep. LOL

If you LIKE your money to be subject to institutionalized, government-sponsored counterfeiting, then you should be very happy right now.

It is a REQUIREMENT of the Constitution that we have a gold-backed currency. That didn't stop being a requirment, just because somebody said "I don't like it." It was circumvented so that certain large organizations and individuals could profit immensely.

I trust this doesn't REALLY matter to you.

Imagine you are in an airplane that is about to crash.

A ratty old parachute (Bush)
A fine French bedsheet that sorta looks like a parachute (Kerry)
A sales brochure for the perfect parachute (third party)

I think that has to be one of the best bottom lines I've seen drawn at FR. (though I think we would have seen much more of Bush's conservative bent if it weren't for 9/11 and all that ensued since.)

I am posting the facts that:

1) The currency is deliberately corrupt, and will remain so for the foreseeable future because both parties want it that way.

2) The Constitution is not being studiously not enforced, and its key provision requiring a gold-backed currency, flouted.

3) The nation is destined for perpetual inflation as a result, and its citizens for increasingly lifelong indebtedness.

(All accessories to and apologists for the economic crimes of FDR, please take a bow.)

The constitution requires a gold-backed currency, since gold, unlike Federal Reserve "dollars", CANNOT be manufactured by an accounting trick, out of thin air.

You have not made any effort to discuss issues. You have spent your time calling names and making rather strange comments. "Defend the indefensible"? To what do you refer? And just so you are historically accurate the 1986 tax reform bill reduced the number of categories of mariginal rates ...the 1981 tax bill actually reduced mariginal rates. Moreover those who call Reagan a pragmatist are more coprrect than you. He did have a core set of values but he also knew which battles to fight and which to let slide... Go ahead vote for any third party that you want to...I suspect that is what you have done for years. I on the other hand will work to get like minded people elected so that they can do some good. And by the way just in case you didn't know we are at WAR...that makes all the difference in the world to me. I want there to be a US left after the year 2005

Great analogy...and for those who want better from congress start voting for better candidates for local and state elections...Bush would be irrelevant if the house and senate were solidly in a particular camp...and God please don't let it be demorat ( think back to Tip O'neill folks)

Owens-Santorum would work for me. But--could they WIN? The best candidate in the universe means nothing if they can't convince the mushy moderate fence-sitters to vote for them."

--Then how did Reagan, the only conservative ever elected as president, do it???
