NEW YORK - Hollywood stars at a Democratic Party fund-raiser ripped President Bush as a liar, "another cheap thug" and a killer in a night of Bush bashing that put John F. Kerry, the party's presumed presidential candidate, and John Edwards, his running mate, on the defensive and provoked widespread criticism. Both senators were on stage late Thursday night in Radio City Music Hall as the stars uttered their remarks. Neither one rebuked them. Kerry, in fact, said that every performer "conveyed the heart and soul of America." On Friday, Republicans called on the Kerry campaign to repudiate the remarks and to release a videotape of the concert so people can judge for themselves. Kerry aides reacted by saying that the stars' attacks didn't represent the candidate's thinking. The concert raised $7.5 million for the campaign. "If John Kerry is going to praise last night's star-studded hate-fest and characterize it as the "heart and soul' of America, he should share these values with voters everywhere," said Ken Mehlman, Bush campaign manager. Even a song written for the event captured the vehemence of the night. In "Texas Bandido," John Mellencamp wrote, "He's just another cheap thug that sacrifices our young . . . You're going to get us killed with your little white lies." In a statement Friday, Sen. Zell Miller, D-Ga., said he was saddened, but not surprised that Kerry, D-Mass., didn't challenge the commentary. "Last night John Kerry held a fund-raiser in New York that featured performers in a time of war calling the president of the United States a killer, a cheap thug and a liar. John Kerry just sat there, grinning like a mule eating briars," Miller said. The controversy erupted as the struggle to define the mainstream values at the center of the campaign intensified. Bush was in Pennsylvania on Friday to counter Kerry's claim last week that he represented the "conservative values" of the heartland. Kerry and Edwards, D-N.C., have argued that fighting for the middle class is a truer measure of moral values than what they call the divisive social issues used by Republicans. But at the gala concert, attended by 6,000 people, many of the stars of political Hollywood weren't so diplomatic. Actress Meryl Streep attacked Bush's frequent references to his religious faith. "I wondered to myself through the shock and awe, I wondered which of the mega-ton bombs Jesus, our president's personal savior, would have personally dropped on the sleeping families in Baghdad," Streep said. Actress Jessica Lange called the Bush regime a "self-serving regime of hypocrisy and belligerence." Comedian Whoopi Goldberg caused nervous laughter, and uncomfortable looks from Kerry and Edwards, when she repeatedly referred to the new vice presidential candidate as "kid" - and made off-color sexual puns on the president's name. Kerry campaign officials said they wouldn't release a videotape of the concert, but they also sought to distance themselves from the spicier remarks and tone of the event, while defending the First Amendment rights of the performers. "The performers last night were speaking for themselves," said Mary Beth Cahill, Kerry's campaign manager. "He (Kerry) does not approve of some of the remarks, and he has made that clear."
The party of intellect and savvy....
As POTUS GWB represents our country and us.
I trust that most don't take kindly to be considered a thug without warrant.
Somehow, me thinks that JCM has a firm grasp of the definition of a thug however lacks the direction for the use of the term.
Kerry is a piker. Lurch and mop top deserve eachother.
A lot of these quotes that are pulled I hadn't heard before. I just wish that those reporters that were there would report it. You can be sure if it were the Bush campaign, they would. It sounds to me it's even worse than first thought. No wonder the Kerry campaign is doing a two-step fake on this.
RE: He was born in 1953.
Thanks for the little tidbit of info!
My mother always told me you are judged by the company you keep. I do not understand for the life of me how anyone would want to be associated with this group.
can we start a reward fund to provide "incentive" for anyone who might have a copy of the tape? or better yet, anyone know someone who might help us fund our hunt?
The rancid comments of these has-been performers play real well in Europe, and it's all about money, about promoting Hollywood films abroad (which is of course a huge market for American entertainment.)
Interesting to contrast the Sean Hannity Freedom Concert that took place across the Hudson in New Jersey on the same evening, with this Radio City Music Hall "event".
"Every performer conveyed the heart and soul of America."
Actress Meryl Streep: "I wondered to myself through the shock and awe, I wondered which of the mega-ton bombs Jesus, our president's personal savior, would have personally dropped on the sleeping families in Baghdad."
"Every performer conveyed the heart and soul of America."
Actress Jessica Lange called the Bush regime a "self-serving regime of hypocrisy and belligerence."
"Every performer conveyed the heart and soul of America."
Comedian Whoopi Goldberg ... made off-color sexual puns on the president's name.
"Every performer conveyed the heart and soul of America."
Kerry campaign officials ... sought to distance themselves from the spicier remarks and tone of the event: "The performers last night were speaking for themselves," said Mary Beth Cahill, Kerry's campaign manager. "(Kerry) does not approve of some of the remarks, and he has made that clear."

"while defending the First Amendment rights of the performers."
What morons. The first amendment has nothing to do with this. NO ONE is suggesting that the performers be censored. What they are suggesting, is that the aspiring LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD have an opinion about what they said, and explain why they AREN'T representative of the Kerry Platform.
Every day my list of whose movies I will no longer watch and/or buy grows and grows.
Wish I knew who all were at that fund-raiser.
Would Jesus have approved of any war at any time?
If you're talking about the Jesus of the bible, then the answer is a definite "yes."
Recall:
1. Jesus and David the Warrior: Jesus comments on David's taking the holy bread which was meant only for the priests. No condemnation of David's being involved in war at that moment.
2. Jesus and Centurions: Jesus commended their faith, and he even helped them, but never did he condemn their being soldiers.
3. Jesus and Swords: He DID say at one point that his apostles should arm themselves with a sword.
4. Jesus, Whip, and the Irreligious: Jesus did drive them out of the temple with a whip.
Which Jesus does Streep believe in? Odds are, she doesn't believe in any Jesus at all.

Dear Ms. Cahill
I have a suggestion. Someone at the DNC needs to write a Kerry/Edwards-to-English translater dictionary so that American voters can understand Senators Kerry and Edwards' remarks correctly. I sure as h*/l would have taken the statements "you conveyed the heart and soul of America" and "this is an expression of American values" to mean approval.
See what I mean, such a silly misunderstanding on my part.
I've been thinking that we can use this Whoopi bash and the Michael Moore support for Kerry to our advantage. We should have someone dress as Al Gore, Whoopi Goldberg (with a big WHOOPI cushion pasted to the seat of their pants)and another person dressed as Michael Moore. They should be wearing a sign bearing one of their anti-Bush quotes and be carrying a sign saying, The Coalition of the Wild-eyed supports John Kerry.
When are conservatives going to learn BOYCOTT HOLYWIERD,
I already do that. I no longer give one cent of my entertainment dollars to the Hollyweird traitors of our great country.

Slimfast.com has an online form for complaints. I have sumbitted mine re Ms. Goldberg. I would suggest others who are disgusted by her comments do the same.
I spent an hour contacting everyone I know to contact Slim Fast and fill out a complaint form.
This was my comment:
I find it repugnant that you would have a celebrity spokesperson who chooses to trash our country's President in such a filthy and disgusting manner. However, this is your choice. My choice is to stop buying your product until you put more thought into who you allow to endorse your company. Thank you.
Would Jesus have approved of any war at any time?
If you're talking about the Jesus of the bible, then the answer is a definite "yes."
You have to remember Streep-throat andher ilk know as much about the bible as they do politics.
Their image of Jesus is "Buddy Christ" from the film "Dogma"
