Because his marriage is a business deal. She gave him some of her money, but she wasn't going to give him more just because he was running for President. That meant he had to liquidate his equity in order to keep his campaign alive. We all said it was a bad investment at the time, but of course what it ignored was that he could raise political contributions and pay himself back. Not too risky.

Thanks so much for clearing that up for me.  It's been nagging at me for awhile now, wondering why on earth he had to "mortgage" a house?  I've seen pictures of their 6 houses.  My goodness.  Must be nice, eh?
