The wife of vice presidential hopeful John Edwards is defending Whoopi Goldberg after the potty-mouthed comedienne attacked President Bush with an X-rated monologue at Thursday night's Kerry-Edwards fundraiser in New York.
Rejecting calls for her husband's campaign to apologize for Goldberg's outburst, Mrs. Edwards said Friday that the anti-Bush tirade was justified.
"A lot of people are going to be angry - there's a lot to be angry about," she told reporters at a fundraising breakfast on Manhattan's West side. "It's a free country and people are going to express that anger."

Angry White Tub's 'o Lard (AWTL). Hmmmm, wonder if that's a new voting block.
He has a photographic memory and the cunning of all psychopaths. That's why he impresses some as "smart". Fools.
Shame on her. (Expressing my own opinion too.)
I agree with you that it would nice to debate the issues and talk about substantive topics. But this is America, baby! Its photo ops and tv appearances! Abe Lincoln would never get elected in America today - he was just too funny looking!
But your lawyer-boy husband and his lawyer-boy running mate won't release the Whoopi tape.
Maybe not physically. But by defending this x-rated hate fest, she's revealed a deep and profound ugliness in her heart and soul.
Because of the man standing behind her with a dark suit, you can't tell where her front profile is. Since the neckline of her jacket is bulged out by her arms compressing her bustline, you automatically assume that she goes straight down from there - which would make her about 100 pounds overweight, well into morbidly obese.
I don't think she's actually that heavy.
If she is, I pity rather than condemn her, 'cause she's got some serious issues. I could stand to lose 20 pounds myself, but I'm not running for office or campaigning for my husband ditto. Were that the case, I would set aside the time and energy required to get the job done. Since it's not the case, my kids, my husband, my job, my dog, and my cats come first.
For one thing, the left is already trying to hedge its bets. Look at the condescending way the *lefty* press is writing about her. She's "thinking" about improving her appearance. It's like they know it leaves a lot to be desired.
Contrast this with Tipper Gore, who seemed to have some affection on her side.
This is also the Hollywood gang who do nothing but judge on appearance. They have to be uncomfortable with someone who badly needs a "makeover."
I'm thinking of starting a vanity thread of "she's so fat" jokes:
She's so fat......her tailor is Omar the tentmaker!
I agree. As I've noted (posted later on this thread), it is she who employs personal insults against George W. Bush, and I'll guess we'll hear a subtle slam directed Laura's way from Ms. Edwards before too long. But I'll content myself with noting her statements and not return in kind.
You are correct.
I hear the faint strains of a Polka starting right about now!
Lardbutt Lizzie is a low class bum......
There's plenty to trash her on without going there.
She is more to be pitied than censured,< /crashing music-hall chord >
She is more to be helped than despised.
She is only a lassie who ventured
On life's thorny path ill-advised.
Do not scorn her with words fierce and bitter,
Do not laugh at her shame and downfall:
For a moment, just stop and consider
That a man was the cause of it all.
Yeah, maybe she can't help being that way, but she could stay home.
shes not fat shes just 4 feet too short.
But I do wonder if the Edwards' had their darling children in attendance at this libfest.
