Doty believes a strong work ethic is the most important education a child can receive, which is why he brought the boys to work.

The state believes otherwise.
And they will destroy you to prove it.
Better your children should grow up to be dependent on state benefits.
Then, they'll leave you alone.

Here's a story of a real American patriot, idealistic enough to believe we still live in a free republic.
If they'll do this to a guy like Mr. Doty, none of us are exempt.

Jude Doty is fighting state laws that prohibit his sons Zach, left,
and Stephen, from working with him in his business.

You can't hide behind a bible to commit such fraud.

The boys, 13 and 11 at the time, were riding on the peak of a house as it moved down the street, callers reported, pushing up low-hanging traffic lights. They were flagging traffic at construction sites, driving bulldozers and backhoes, and they seldom if ever wore protective gear. Fueling fears for the boys' safety, a backhoe flipped with Zach inside.

I really question this guy's judgment.

Plus, there is the issue of his other employees- these kids are not qualified to drive bulldozers and backhoes. There's a very good chance that they'll squash another employee or a bystander.

I think the government is right on this one.

You know, even if the government wasn't involved in this, I would shun this guy for insanely poor judgment. He gives a bad name to all Christians when he tries to hid behind a bible as a shield to his poor actions.

Happened to me once, only I didn't have the luxury of a cab. I took a dirt dive.

Little kids have no business on this kind of equipment. He should find them work to do more suitable to their ages and the state should just butt out.

Yup. You can teach kids a work ethic without putting them in danger.

What type of protective gear does one need to operate a backhoe or a dozer? A pair of boots? How would this be any different than working on the family farm?

Interesting story, well-written. Not simple.

This isn't the first time Doty's beliefs have run counter to the law. He's been arrested a dozen times, he says, maybe more. In 1983, he was charged with third-degree assault after spanking an 18-month-old boy with a stick, Kittitas County Superior Court records show. Doty, who believes in corporal punishment, was running a homeless shelter in Ellensburg at the time and disciplined the boy, with his mother's permission, for "acting up at the supper table." A jury found him not guilty.

I've heard of innocent until proven guilty, and guilty until proven innocent but here we have the media inventing guilty after proven innocent!! Amazing!!

Probably pretty standard stuff- head protection, eye protection, steel-toed boots. Of course, even if the kids had all that stuff, it still wouldn't address the issue of the danger they would pose to other workers and to bystanders.

How would this be any different than working on the family farm?

Read the article- farms are exempt from many of these regulations due to sentimental reasons, basically.

So, every one of you believes it's the role of the state to dictate what the man does in these cases?

Most of the initial responses to this article honestly surprise me.

The writer attributes to the father the statement that he is not anti-government, I purport that anyone who is not anti-government today is but a myopic moron

Almost never does the interest of the state and the interest of the individual coincide except at the expense of another.

I agree that kids should learn a work ethic. I don't agree that they should be taught such an ethic by working in jobs where they pose a danger to themselves and to the others around him.

Nobody is threatening to put him in jail- he's being fined and enjoined from using his kids as free labor in a dangerous line of work.

Don't build strawman arguments.

No different.
Except, as the state agent said in the article, the farm lobby has more money and political clout.
Now, if we just had an attorney like John Edwards to go after the farmers, we could make all the children safe on farms too.
WE NEED TO DO IT "FOR THE CHILDREN."
And, while we're at it, let's go after parents who make their kids mow the lawn!

As my tagline alludes, the allegations of non-conformity are enormous and permanent.

Kind of jumps out at you, doesn't it? I think this guy loves his kids and probably has the best of intentions. He just doesn't seem to have common sense and good judgment.
