July 6, 2004 -- EXCLUSIVE
John Kerry has chosen Rep. Richard Gephardt, the veteran congressman from Missouri, to be his running mate, The Post has learned.
Gephardt, 63, a 28-year veteran of the House of Representatives, could be named by the presumptive Democratic nominee as the party's vice-presidential candidate as soon as today.
The Massachusetts senator was set to announce the winner of the veep-stakes at a rally this morning in Pittsburgh, according to several reports last night.
With the July 26 Democratic convention in Boston looming, Kerry is looking for some advantage in the polls, and is hoping his choice of running mate will be the answer.

If it's Gephardt, there will be problems downline.
Gephardt has some habits that might play well in his heavily unionized district in STL, but not elsewhere.
In the 2002 campaign, he sent union goons out to rough up his Republican opponent. Problem was, the Republican Federer had camera rolling.
Other Gephardt laugher. The Mississippi River was flooding way beyond its banks in St. Louis. Gephardt arrived, filled one sand bag for the cameras, then hopped in limo and left!

"That being said, this could be the MOST boring presidential ticket I have ever seen in my life."
I don't know; Ford v. Carter was pretty dull, as was Bush I v. Dukakis. The only fun thing about the Bush I v. Dukakis contest was that photo of Dukakis in the tank, with the helmet all but covering his entire head. What a priceless photo! It is one of the all-time best, right up there with LBJ picking up his dog by the ears and LBJ showing off his appendectomy scars, and Calvin Coolidge wearing the Indian headdress.

CNN analyst just said: Kerry can take the simple and make it complex; Edwards can take the complex and make it simple.

One thing and one only will dictate default "DemocRAT: Kerry's 'pick:'
First Rate folks hire only First Rate folks.
And second raters, only fifth raters.
Sounds like you're on to something then.
And that it's a lay down misère Mr Gephardt's gunna pick Kerry to be his running mate.

"Kerry is an anti-Southern bigot. His whole strategy is coastal/midwest."
I wouldn't even say it's Midwest, because he's not popular in Indiana, nor in Kansas or Nebraska, and he'll struggle in Ohio and Michigan. He does, however, have a lock on Illinois and Wisconsin, and he'll carry Iowa and Minnesota. The Midwest will likely split 50/50 as far as the states, but Kerry will probably have the electoral advantage.

The other question is:
"What if Kerry picks some other candidate tomorrow."
[This guy actually said that!!!!]

Edwards kept coming in second in most of the Dem Primaries.
Edwards continued his seconds streak by being the second choice behind John McCain for Kerry's pick for VP.
Maybe Edwards will keep his seconds streak alive by coming in second in to Bush-Cheney in November.
