Deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein is "very likely" to be hanged if convicted on charges of war crimes and genocide, Britain's former special envoy to Iraq said.
Sir Jeremy Greenstock said the Iraqi authorities would reinstate capital punishment as the ultimate sanction in their criminal code. The punishment was suspended during the coalition's rule of the country.
Saddam faced a range of charges including the gassing of Iraqi Kurds and the 1990 invasion of Kuwait when he made a preliminary appearance before a court in Baghdad last week.
Interviewed on BBC 1's Breakfast with Frost, Sir Jeremy said: "If he (Saddam) is found guilty, I think it is very likely that he would be executed.
"The Iraqis will change the law from the occupation period. Obviously the British are against that in principle. But this is now an Iraqi trial.
"The important thing I think, internationally and indeed for Iraqis, is that this trial should be a fair one, under recognised and acceptable rules of procedure."
I like the way you think.
Why would they hang him, have they outlawed beheadings now in new government??? Are they trying to set more western example for Iraqi people??
LOL!

Same feeling here, but I trust that the Americans guarding him would shoot HIM at the first sign of trouble, then deal with his loyalists. That's the rumor I'd spread, anyway.
You did this nation proud, Ronnie.
"I remember old folks when I was a kid talking about hangings they had seen. I have never wanted to watch a hanging but I would reconsider that decision for this one."
I'm all for hanging, just so they make it verrrrry slow, no drop, just a rope around his neck and pull him about 4 inches off the ground so that with a supreme effort, he can support some of his weight on his tiptoes. I hope it's televised so the entire world can witness it - probably Al Jazeera will want to feature it, right!!
