ABC News: Kerry May Have Already Picked Gephardt
ABC's The Note ^ | July 4, 2004 | ABC News Political Unit

Posted on 07/04/2004 7:48:33 AM PDT by Bonaventure

Over the last few weeks, Sen. Kerry has had many more face-to-face meetings with potential picks than the press has reported.

One such meeting, several well-informed sources say, took place last Thursday night.

Kerry was in his home in Georgetown, and at around 10:30 pm, the last reporter staking him out -- someone from ABC News -- appeared to leave for the night.

Our sources say that Kerry and his Secret Service agents then went the very short distance to the nearby home of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Albright is a supporter of Kerry and has her office now in the same office building in Washington as the Kerry campaign.

At Albright's house late Thursday night, Kerry had a meeting with just a small group of people -- one of whom, our sources say, seemed to be the person Kerry at that moment planned to pick as his running mate.

Although Kerry said as recently as yesterday that he has not made a decision, our sources believe that this meeting might have served as the final face-to-face session the future running mates will have before announcement day, which could be as soon as this Tuesday.

Of the three potential picks whose advisers have confirmed have handed over reams of background information and believe themselves to be still in the running, there's only one we think was in DC that night -- Dick Gephardt. Tom Vilsack's staff says he was in Iowa and John Edwards, like many great Americans, was at Disney World with his family.

Other options -- Senator Joseph Biden, former Defense Secretary Bill Cohen, well, we are still checking to pin down where they were on Thursday night.

Of course, Senator Kerry could have changed whatever decision he might have made since last Thursday, and it is possible he has sent mixed signals (purposefully or not) to his advisers.

The Kerry campaign had no comment on this.

"The Greedy Geezers will deliver for Bush, won't they? After all, it's not their money."

You just want them to eat dog food. Admit it!

But he does have some vulnerabilities. He was busted by the press early on for issuing a secret executive order giving preferential hiring treatment to gays, lesbians, transgenders, etc.

Right, but to liberals, that's not any drawback. It can be "old news" in a campaign and glossed over. WHO doesn't ever seem to have anything bad to say....

Does Gephardt deliver Missouri into Kerry's column?

I'm in agreement with you that Gephardt will not deliver Missouri for Kerry. Gephardt has never held state-wide office or for that matter, he's never even run for state-wide office. Voters in the Ozarks or corn belt could care less that he's from this state.

I will concede that his union backing could help him in a state like Ohio which seems to be up for grabs right now.

Our Dick is better than their Dick.

The debate would be "Big Time vs. Little Dick"

I'd be thrilled if it were Gephardt-- I'm from St. Louis and I'd love to see that little weasel go down to defeat again. And, even if it's Edwards, I look forward to a vice-presidential debate, where Cheney will send Edwards home to cry on mommy's shoulder.

Does Gephardt deliver Missouri into Kerry's column? If he does, that's no small qualification. Missouri has, what, 11 electoral votes? Not exactly chump change.

No. Gephardt got re-elected ONLY by the power of big labor in his south St. Louis district. There was always a fair-sized 'dump Dick' movement, but not big enough. If he had to run state-wide, he wouldn't sway voters who weren't already voting Democratic.

Who in Missouri likes Gephardt besides St. Louis County? I'm from Southeast, MO. Missouri will be in the Republican lineup. Then again, we did elect Carnahan statewide twice. But I doubt Dick could win a statewide race in MO.

Then again, in another thread it was said that sKerry's dates started at midnight back when he was single. Maybe this was just a little date at Albrieght's place.

This subterfuge is silly. It will be Edwards.

Or, Edwards name being often mentioned is subterfuge.

IMO, if Hillary has anything to say about it, it will be Gephardt. Edwards will be Hillary's mate in '08.

Yeah, he helps with Iowa. Definitely. That's why he won such a huge percentage of the vote in Iowa. However, I'm all for this pick.

Lyin' Dick doesn't even have wide support in his old 3rd District anymore. Without the black vote in south St. Louis, Gephardt would've been toast long ago. St. Louis is emptying out and more conservative South County and Jefferson County are booming. Voters in his district have grown weary of his Mediscare demagoguery and pro-abortion, pro-gay positions. He couldn't even bring the bacon home anymore and had to resort to calling his Republican opponents, "militia sympathizers". Living on Cape Hatteras like a Kennedy potentate while representing the hoi polloi back home doesn't help, either.

Gephardt brings strong union support, more experience, more potential electoral votes, and most importantly, a complexion that makes Kerry's face look like a baby's behind.

JF'nK is too petty and small to pick a more charasmatic, better looking running mate. It's as simple as that.

Gephardt's the pick.

"... and John Edwards, like many great Americans, was at Disney World with his family."

What do you suppose the "like many great Americans" means? It seems oddly out of place with the rest of the sentence. Maybe Edwards is who the author wishes was tapped?

"Does Gephardt deliver Missouri into Kerry's column?"

Hell no. Moves it 1% in his direction at best.

Bush will carry Missouri, np. Their current Governor will be a drag on all D's in Missouri IMHO. (now lets just pray he survives his primary challenge)
