NEW HAVEN — A teenager has been arrested as the alleged gunman in a city man’s scheme to avoid being drafted by having himself shot in the leg.

Police arrested Alex Lowery, 17, whose last known address was 140 Hallock Ave., late Thursday on a warrant charging him with first-degree assault and weapons counts in connection with a June 24 shooting in the Hill.

He's a man. Of a sort.

I was in uniform when I was 20, not shooting self in leg to avoid service.

Two words. ID-jit.

17 or 20, it doesn't matter, old enough to know better.

A story about a pair of life-long Democrat voters and Michael Moore fans.

The left wing is completely insane. The DU'ers have their panties in a wad over a draft. The way they are acting, you'd think they were in a wad on their heads. They have been railing against the U.S. and the President over the possibility of a draft and it's their own political party that has been making the draft noises. I guess it works that way though. Use the lives of people for political points then just flat out lie about it since the crazy wing of your party will believe exactly what they want to believe - that it's the fault of Republicans.

You think he'd at least wait until he got his draft notice before staging this. Apparently he thought that every 20 year old male in the country was supposed to report to boot camp next week.

Kid has himself shot, to avoid the imaginary risk of getting drafted, sent someplace, and shot at.

A REAL idjit, because a leg shot is no guarantee of survival. Many a man has his femoral artery cut when shot in the leg, and died a quick and painful death because of it. He's also lucky.

Thats like the movie Strips. One of the characters in the platoon joined the army before he was drafted. "Son there's no draft anymore."

I think that Charlie Rangel should be blamed for this-since I am sure the spinmiesters will somehow try to blame our President. Rangel was the one that kept screaming: Draft! Draft! Draft!

Doesn't say much about his parents either, or our public school system, among other things.

That was Stripes. Strips was about a different kind of draft. :-)

Oh, not crazy insane, but crazy like a fox. The idea is to undercut support for the war, defeat Republicans, and get back in power. The Dems, starting with Rangell who is proposing this, know damn well it won't pass, first of all because it's not needed (just ask the military), and secondly, the Republican-controlled Congress won't approve it. But...if it makes younger men and their parents fearful of them and their boys getting drafted and killed in Iraq, then maybe they'll start demanding we cut and run before we have to draft again. Bush won't cut and run, of course, and the overall War on Terrorism is far from finished, so the Dems hope this will sour folks on Bush.

Have your 18 year old intern look what the Democrats are trying to introduce in the House and Senate. They are trying to scare young people and to defeat Bush. The Democrats want another Vietnam era with young people burning their draft cards. The bill is literally on the floor. No one wants to touch it with a ten foot pole. Career military prefer the all-volunteer military. Better morale, better training and most of all...better pay!

He was frightened and he felt faint and he tried to say an act of contrition and he remembered how it started but before he had said, as fast as he could, “Oh, my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee who art worthy of all my love and I firmly resolve ... ,” he felt too faint and he was lying face down on the floor and it was over very quickly. A severed femoral artery empties itself faster than you can believe.
