Suspicious Non-boater at Jax Marina (Superbowl as Target?)
Newsradio WOKV ^ | 06/30/04 | WOKV

Marina Workers Call Police On Suspicious Man Employees at a Beach Boulevard marina say the man was asking strange questions before renting a boat from them. The unidentified man wanted to know about local landmarks, bridge schedules, boat traffic and how it would affect the Super Bowl. The game will be held in Jacksonville next year.

Witnesses say the man was dressed in a suit when he went out on a pontoon boat for 30 minutes Saturday, and was wearing the same business suit Sunday. He was also wearing it in his California driver's license photo.

One employee tells our news partner Channel 4, "he called 7 times, confirming his rental" which he paid for in cash.

Other boaters say the man didn't know how to run the pontoon boat, and asked them to draw him a map.

A domestic security task force is now investigating the case, and wouldn't offer anymore details.

Not to sound paranoid or anything, but the guy in the rented van looked very foreign.

Admittedly, it could have been somethign innocent as you mentioned.
But he kept looking nervously at every car that went by, and hid the camcorder when I slowed to look at him.
(I still had my short military haircut at the time.)

They didn't bother to talk to him.
They were more interested in confiscating skateboards and stopping women driving alone and chatting them up rather than checking into odd suspicious behavior.

So they were too busy going after the real criminals.:) Maybe someone should have told them he was a dealing drugs. The cops really love to confiscate property.

Welcome to Freerepublic! Any special meaning to your name?;D

I agree, I am happy to have the military presence- don't forget Blount Island and Kingsbay so close by.

Jacksonville has three mosques and a large Muslim population starting from 1967 with the Lebanese to the current Bosnian influx. You would expect that the terrorists would try to recruit someone local, or someone European looking, but apparently Jax is only a hotbed of Navy--not jihadi--recruits. I know they managed to kill 3000 of my countrymen, but you would think they would at least be smart enough to wait for the Kingfish tournament when an influx of visitors would make it easier to fit in.

The Superbowl will be great for the town, and I am encouraged by the fabulous job that the state and federal security agencies did keeping the peace atthe G-8 summit this year. Now, if we could just make sure that half time is a skank free zone...

"I'm gonna guess that the guy wasn't Jewish."

Well then, you haven't been reading the Iranian Press:

Well, don't get me started on airport security:
I dropped my wife and son, and her mother off at DFW last Saturday, and waited and watched until they were through "Security."

The rentaNazis were having EVERYone take their shoes off, even running shoes with no metal parts, including my 7-yr-old, and were hand-wanding elderly white women, etc.

Only two possible explanations:
Either we've got political correctness run amok, or the people in charge of "Security" are of sub-human intelligence.

Both are distinct possibilities, AFAICS.

"Was he an Arab?"

Chechnyan Islamonazis are just as bad, and many of them do NOT "look Arab".

But the bottom line is, they DID rent him the boat, and he went off and did whatever it was he had intended, correct?

Likely both at the same time.
*ugh*

The event I mentioned, where the guy in the renta-van was vidtaping the local airport, happeend not even a week after 9/11.
You'd think that the local polizei would be slightly more alert or suspicious, heck, they were stopping people for merely looking at them.
Of course, we're also talking about the same police who let a guy go because he was of a group it wouldn't have been politically correct to arrest.

Yes, he had 30 minutes in a pontoon boat on the Intercoastal waterway at Beach Boulevard. Alltel Stadium is on the St. Johns River twenty miles away. Every major bridge in town is on the Saint John's River, with a small fishing park either on it or near it, easily accesible by car. Across from NAS Mayport, there is a park with river camping facing the base.

Bottom line, idiot terrorist wannabe is in a suit in 99 degree weather, on a boat he doesn't know how to operate on the wrong body of water... I am sure the rental clerks at the marina were happy to take his money, call in the feds and laugh their a$$es off at his incompetence... Dang, now that I think about it, I want to buy these guys a beer.

interesting point - when a perps race is NOT given, it's code for minority. Whenever a "white" offends we are sure to be told that is the case. In the local Santa Monica newspaper police blotter perps are descrtibed by color of hair and color of eyes but NEVER color of skin .... heh

Close enough:

Chechen terrorist leader Shamil Basayev

If he was casing the scene for Al-Queda it's good news in that they haven't taught them anything about establishing a cover.

The report mentions that the suspect was seen wearing the same black suit at both times and in the drivers license photo.

It's gotta be hillary!
