Protestors overshadow Kerry at Rainbow/PUSH convention
ABC 7 Chicago ^ | June 29, 2004 | Andy Shaw

Posted on 06/29/2004 8:26:24 PM PDT by Land_of_Lincoln_John

While Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry addressed education during a speech at Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, critics of Daimler-Chrysler picketed outside the building.

Reverend Jackson is trying to help Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry connect with African American voters and this year's Rainbow PUSH conference provided a perfect venue. But Kerry's appearance this morning was overshadowed by a crowd of black activists. They're angry at Jackson for allowing an allegedly racist auto company to underwrite a portion of the rain be bow push conference.

"The black vote is not for sale. The black vote is not for sale," chanted the demonstrators.

Nearly a hundred African American demonstrators protested outside the Rainbow-PUSH convention. They accuse the Reverend Jesse Jackson of selling out the black community by allowing automotive giant Daimler Chrysler help underwrite the cost of the convention. The carmaker is accused in a lawsuit of subjecting black buyers to racially discriminatory sales policies and making derogatory racial comments about African Americans.

"We believe that this is some kind of payment for support and to make sure that the African American community is controlled by the privileged few," said Lance Davis, Voices for Morality.

"We're going to stand up and let it be known that no racist company will benefit from us," said Derrick Mosley, activist.

"People who work at Daimler Chrysler and people who work at G.M., they, too, have a right to have their resources used for organizations they support and believe in," said Rev. Jackson. He said he is keeping the heat on Daimler Chrysler even as he accepts the company's cash.

"Many people work there because we help get them jobs. Many blacks who have franchises have them because we helped get them franchises," said Jackson.

"Support for reverend Jackson has diminished and decreased over the years. In fact, you know, Colin Powell gets much higher marks than Jesse Jackson. So it does not surprise me to hear protests in this regard," said Tara Walls, National Republican Party.

While Reverend Jackson says the demonstrators represent no more than a tiny fraction of the African American community, and he expects blacks to vote overwhelmingly for John Kerry in November because he says the alternative, President Bush, is unacceptable. But Republicans are expecting to do better than usual among African American voters this year, voters who simply like Bush more than Kerry for whatever reason.

A ploy? By positioning leftier leftists near Kerry, it will make him seem more "centrist."

Brit Hume's show had clips of Kerry's speech at Rainbow. It was pretty bad, as these sorts of speeches go. He really started to lose the crowd, and had to go off the teleprompter speech to reassure them that he 'felt their pain.' It was a really tense moment, and I think goes to show that nobody really cares for Kerry - all they care about is the anti-Bush.

There were a couple other grammatical errors I did catch. Missed that one! It's on the ABC 7 web site, not something I messed up.

I notice that this news story didn't mention that Chicago's Mayor Daley stood Senator Kerry up at the Push conference today...

"Many people work there because we help get them jobs. Many blacks who have franchises have them because we helped get them franchises," said Jackson.

Reveruuuund Zhackson doesn't think black employees competed on merit and got jobs? Every black at GM owes Zhackson for their job?!? How incredibly arrogant!

simply like Bush more than Kerry for whatever reason.

Just couldn't have left off the for whatever reason? Just couldn't recognize the likability gap without denigrating Bush?

He said he is keeping the heat on Daimler Chrysler even as he accepts the company's cash.

No doubt, he will use this demonstration to turn the heat up even higher, so he can "accept more of the company's cash." That's what JJ does best.

Kerry also crossed the picket line. You know the same Kerry who said in Boston that he never crosses picket lines. I guess it depends who is picketing (did they give him money) and who's on the other side. Mayor Daley defends Bush and has made comments to the press that a lot of their coverage of Bush is unfair.

I almost had to pull over when I heard the description of the speech on WBBM Newsradio 780 in the afternoon. The guy said 'judging from the yawns, cellphone usage and people leaving its going to be an uphill fight to defeat his opponent in the White House' - I couldn't believe it. It had to be bad since WBBM is usually a Dumbocrat mouthpiece.

"The black vote is not for sale. The black vote is not for sale," chanted the demonstrators.

Apparently the Democratic Party didn't get the memo yet.
