PORTSMOUTH, Va. — An elementary educator who taught classes until last year was charged with having images of nude youths and using his computer to solicit children.
It was not clear if any alleged victims had been students of Kelly Karl Bowen (search), 30.
"We can't even tell you how many victims there are yet," Assistant Attorney General Russell E. McGuire said at a bond hearing Thursday. "These kids, we need to find out who they are. We need to get them into counseling."
The investigation began June 17 when an undercover officer had an Internet chat with someone posing as a woman who "liked to have sex with young boys," according to court records.
The person also claimed to have pornographic pictures and videos of children, the records said.
Investigators linked the screen name to Bowen, and his home was then searched, uncovering images of nude children and at least one image depicting Bowen performing a sex act on a child, prosecutors said.
Bowen spent five years as a teacher in Portsmouth Public Schools (search) before being promoted to social studies specialist, schools spokeswoman Virginia Derr said.
For the past school year, he had an office at an elementary school and worked with teachers. He was placed on leave Thursday.
Defense attorney Robert L. Samuel Jr. said Bowen is married and has no criminal record. Bowen was also an assistant youth minister at a Methodist church in Suffolk.
Bowen was charged with nine counts of possessing child pornography and one count of using a computer to solicit sex with a child, all felonies. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 50 years in prison.

One could just as easily say that this is someone who maneuvered himself into positions of respect and trust in the community with the underlying goal to manipulate and take advantage of VERY YOUNG (elementary school age) children.
He's being held without bond because the judge believes him to be a threat to the community and possibly a flight risk. The evidence presented likely influenced the judge's decision.
Whether he is convicted of the crimes and serves 50 years is of course up to the jury at the trial, but the judge may have given us a clue as to the strength of the evidence, which will be tangible in nature, not merely "politically bad thoughts".

You're exactly right of course.
It's difficult to find anything positive (other than the perp's capture) in this matter, but one could argue that this sort of thing will further improve the stature and legitimacy of charter schools and of course homeschooling. It's one more reason for parents to think twice before sending their child to a Government school.

Yes indeed....and to add what I mentioned in my previous post, this will also make parents think twice about the church they go to and the extracurricular church activities that they allow their children to participate in. Unfortunately, this will have the effect of hurting all churches in a way but it will also challenge churches to take a stand on the homosexuality issue and be up-front about it to families....people will be demanding disclosure on this sort of thing more and more in an effort to make good decisions and protect themselves.

As the article as well as other posters have abundantly noted, this is not a matter of "foolishness"....this is a matter of evidence of sex with a child. It's not a matter of "computer users looking at porno"...it's a matter of downloading illegal and exploitative material that harms children. By downloading this sort of material from illegal websites (which, I understand, usually involves paid membership for access)this pervert is supporting an illegal industry that does nothing but make money at the cost of destroying the lives of children.
As to the doctoring of photos, I gather then that your allegation is that the evil, untrustworthy law enforcement Nazis spent a considerable amount of time producing "doctored" images of this pervert having sex with a child...images that are so well doctored that they would stand up to intense scrutiny in court, and then, without this pervert's knowledge, transferred these images to his computer. Then, they would somehow be able to convince a judge to grant a search warrant of the residence....based upon what? Their "suspicion" that there is kiddie porn on his computer? In order to get a warrant, they most likely had evidence that he was a member of some sort of online kiddie porno club.
If these evil, untrustworthy law enforcement Nazis were so terribly eager to cause trouble for this person, wouldn't there be an easier way of doing it? A way that couldn't be easily substantiated or refuted by witness testimony and ISP records?
If they (law enforcement) are so completely corrupt and so very eager to "get" this pervert at any cost, why not just "arrest" him on the street, take him into a back room or garage somewhere and simply beat him to death?
