WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Although there hasn't been a draft in more than 30 years, 22-year-old Minneapolis college graduate Nathan Mittelstaedt is worried that he might be forced into military service.

He's not alone.

Despite shaky evidence -- and denials by top officials -- Mittelstaedt and many other young people in Minnesota and across the nation are convinced that a draft is secretly in the works. Through mass e-mails and Internet sites, the word is going out that as early as next June, men and women as old as 34 will be subject to random, mandatory military service.

It isn't true, of course. We're only going to draft leftists. And use them unarmed, in human wave attacks against entrenched enemy machine guns. Sssshhhhh! It's a secret!

THE PLAN IS ALL CHARLIE RANGEL'S!!!!

He's the putz who introduced the bill.

I've had LLL'ers tell me the same crap - they shut their mouths after I show them Rangel's sponsorship of the bill.

Whine bags. They want the protections of this country. To hide behind the flag, the military, the protections. But, these whine bags will not join, and will run if drafted. NO DRAFT! The military does not need the anti-war cry babies of the Vietnam era. We enlistees did just fine.

That's why it's called a rumor.

Widespread rumors about reinstating the draft and the upcoming presidential election are completely unrelated phenomena, I guess.

"Officials are finding the rumors difficult to quash."

Because it is true. "Officials" like Rangel are.

They are creating a "wedge issue" to get a knee-jerk response from their base, and it's working.

It's based on ignorance. We had force levels twice the size as now in the 80's and 90's without a draft.

Good way for the liberals to stir up the troops. It's a variant on stock traders who plant false negative rumors so a stock they are short will fall. Unfortunately, it is a tactic that people who don't follow politics or the news can easily fall for.

Oh my goodness, I just realized that this is really PART OF THE PLAN! Seriously!

Rangel doesn't want the draft, no democrat REALLY does. What they want to do is to plant the idea, the rumour, that a draft is coming soon.. Well, which party do you want in power in case of a draft? Democrats, the party of wusses, OF COURSE.

Folks, this is NOT an accident. Someone pass me a pack of gum, I am gonna need the foil wrapping..

Well, if the intention is for Kerry to capture the brain-dead, credulous 22-year-old moron vote, he's wasting his time. He already has it.

From the Selective Service website:

"Notwithstanding recent stories in the news media and on the Internet, Selective Service is not getting ready to conduct a draft for the U.S. Armed Forces -- either with a special skills or regular draft. Rather, the Agency remains prepared to manage a draft if and when the President and the Congress so direct. This responsibility has been ongoing since 1980 and is nothing new. Further, both the President and the Secretary of Defense have stated on more than one occasion that there is no need for a draft for the War on Terrorism or any likely contingency, such as Iraq. Additionally, the Congress has not acted on any proposed legislation to reinstate a draft. Therefore, Selective Service continues to refine its plans to be prepared as is required by law, and to register young men who are ages 18 through 25."

It's just not going to happen," said Dan Amon, an agency spokesman. "There's no interest whatsoever in Congress.

That's not quite true. The Rats have 2 bills (one in each house)calling for a draft.

Bills S. 89 in the U.S. Senate and H.R. 163 in the House of Representatives introduced early last year, which comprise the National Service Act of 2003, are aimed at restoring equity within the draft. The bills state: To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes.

House bill is sponsored by Charlie Rangel, Mr. MCDERMOTT, Mr. CONYERS, Mr. LEWIS of Georgia, Mr. STARK, and Mr. ABERCROMBIE.

The Senate bill was sponsored by Hollings.

I beleive the women in the draft bill will mostly be trained medial support personnel.

What would we do with draftees?

Our whole military is becomming elite units of very agressive volunteer fighters supported by highly trained volunteer technicians.

There is no room for cannon fodder in that scenario.

I like that idea. Have you thought about writing up an official-sounding bill like that, and letting it fall into the wrong hands? ;0)
