In "The Day After Tomorrow," temperatures skyrocket as a result of global warming before quickly veering into a deep freeze, suspending modern civilization in an ice age.
On Wednesday, the Boulder-based National Center for Atmospheric Research released a program that forecasts its take on the story.
The center's model so accurate it can reproduce past temperatures within a tenth of a degree Celsius shows if carbon dioxide emissions continue at their current level, it's going to get hotter than scientists previously thought. But no ice age.
Although Tinseltown's tale and the scientific model clash on many fronts, they agree global warming is on the horizon. Global warming is a scientific theory that burning fossil fuels leads to emissions of gases that soak up sunlight in the atmosphere and gradually warm the planet the so-called "greenhouse effect."
NCAR's Bill Collins said carbon dioxide, emitted by vehicles and power plants, could double by 2100. According to the new climate model, that could hike global temperatures by 4.7 degrees Fahrenheit.
The previous model showed temperatures rising by 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
"We're going to feel the warming during this century," Collins said.
The center is researching results of such heat, including how it could impact glaciers. Some scenarios on previous models showed Arctic ice nearly disappearing during the summer fewer than 100 years from now, he said.
The updated model is supported by more realistic physics and appears more sensitive, as shown by the increased temperature prediction, Collins said. Whether this means ice could melt earlier than expected is still being investigated.
The center will compare its results with about 20 other climate models from around the world. In 2007, international scientists will release their consensus, designed to advise policy-makers on the likely impacts of climate change.
No models show a drop in temperatures. Sorry, Hollywood.
Jim Hack, a senior scientist with NCAR, said some people might doubt the models, arguing scientists don't understand the climate enough to make predictions.
"But based on the very best models all over the world, everyone says its going to warm. It's just a question of how much," Hack said.
Scientists say people's daily choices may help slow global warming. Driving low-emission vehicles, demanding increased fuel economy standards from policy-makers, supporting wind energy and buying energy-efficient appliances may help.
LOL, any idiot can produce a model that tells us what the weather was yesterday. What a crock of crap.
If this global warming gets any worse I am going to freeze this summer. It is suppose to be in the low 40's tonight.
46 to 50 here in Michigan tonight. not to mention the seemingly endless rain.
ping
Because everyone who makes a model assumes it is gonna get warmer. A model is only as good as the assumptions, and all the assumptions are biased that the tempreture is gonna quickly increase as a result a greenhouse gases. Computer models are not scientific evidence of anything.
Once upon a time, "everyone's" model of the Earth was flat.
the sky is falling, women and minorities hardest hit.
That's an exageration, but that does pretty well sum up the mindset of the globull warmers.
Count me as one FReeper who thinks this is a legitimate concern.
It was raining here this morning and I will send it on to you.
more importantly - they still don't mention the global warming trend on Mars.
Perhaps we can turn the grand canyon into a giant carbon sink. We clear cut all the forests, dump the wood into the canyon, then do a massive tree replanting, and then repeat the process.
Sierra Club needs to get behind this idea.
Kinda tosses out all those hard spent tax dollars. Should had them doing something useful like knitting tea cozy's.
It is uncomfortably warm here in south Florida the past two weeks.
It is a legitimate concern but it is a looooong way from being an exact science. Its also a long way from being Americas fault.
My problem with these so called scientists is the fact that they pick and choose their sources of greenhouse gasses.
oh, it is a legitimate concern, but you have to be sure you are looking at the big picture rather than getting exercised over spun and selective infotainment.
go to the JPL website and spend a couple of hours finding the weather and temperature information on Mars for the last 30 years.
At least one of the moons of either Saturn or Jupiter is also worth looking at, for the same reason, but I cannot recall which one it is.
Thing is, if at least two other satellites of Sol are getting a trifle warmer in the same time period as Earth is, what would that lead one to suspect as the real root cause?
Hint: it ain't "CO2 emissions due to human activity"
Man is incapable of altering the enviornment. "Global Warming Theory" is a socialist international wealth redistribution scheme wrapped around leaky junk science.
