Fourth of July??
Bookmarking for later reading....
Good work, Honestly.
Granny, you have some memory.
P.S. I am getting the same feeling of nausea right now as I did last evening when we first dicussed Plum Island and all the possible connections you suggested...
They forgot the divers!
There is definitely more to the Mubarak story than an attempt to delay back surgery.
Reform in the making
A sense of uncertainty dominated the week as President Hosni Mubarak sought medical treatment overseas. Mubarak's sudden trip to Germany on Sunday for possible back surgery and/or physical therapy generated the kinds of concerns last seen in 2003 when the president interrupted his speech before parliament. That he is to be away for an unspecified period of time has compounded the uncertainty.(snipped)

Utter confusion!
What is to happen if all talk of change and reform in Egypt turns out to be premature, or at least short of people's expectations? What is to happen were people to discover that the timing and scope of change -- of faces and policy -- is not governed by rational political and economic thinking? Some party officials and public figures believe they are entitled to have their say in the matter of reform. Most likely, they will be disappointed. (snipped)

Pretty obvious and I'll bet security is so multilayered it's not even funny. Every possible contingency would be anticipated and already "gamed out." BUT it wouldn't surprise me to see an attack on July 3rd. Everybody will be traveling. It'd be harder to detect movement and even if you had subjects under active surveillance, there would be ample opportunity to give folks the slip and trigger an operation! The same would apply to July 5th.
I am just so glad that he is still alive and that he is being shown in public to prove that. Rumor had it that may be totally incapacitated or dead. It is good news to see that he appeared on the telly. Hmmm, unless he has a body double. ;)
Rift Valley Fever As a Biological Weapon
RVF is considered suitable as a biological weapon for the following reasons:
Several genera of mosquitoes found in the United States can serve as vectors for RVF virus (eg, Aedes, Anopheles, Culex); therefore, the disease could become endemic following an intentional release. This pattern recently has been illustrated following the natural introduction of West Nile virus (which also is a mosquito-borne disease) into North America.
RVF virus infects both humans and livestock and could, therefore, cause both economic damage to the livestock industry and human morbidity and mortality.
The disease has been demonstrated to cause severe socioeconomic damage, largely due to the high abortion rate in sheep.
Once introduced into a new area, the disease would be difficult to eradicate.

Thanks. Granny made me do it!
Amen.
Somebody here (definitely one of the "folks in the loop") sent me a freepmail giving the following odds:
A 70% chance we'll suffer a moderately sized attack on home soil prior to the elections. A 5% chance the terrorists won't try anything at all. A 25% chance that our Homeland Security and Law Enforcement will manage to interdict all attempts made against us. I think that assessment is spot on.
What I read earlier today on this is that there are 23 different types of mosquitos that can carry this disease and transmit it.
West Nile on the other hand limits the mosquitos that can transmit the disease to just a few.
Thank you.

"Behead the Young Infidel" Game Captured on Video:
Shocking New Images Making their Way Across the Internet.
While the images are not as gruesome as the recent beheading videos of Kim Sun Il and Nick Berg they are nonetheless just as disturbing. That's because the participants in this video are young children who are staging a mock execution reminiscent of the Kim and Berg decapitations.
The New York Daily News said the "game" could be called "behead the infidel."
The shocking images in this movie take the words "silent movies" to an entirely different level.
A girl and two hooded boys stand over a kneeling boy all in positions to the ones similar to the ones assumed by the captors in recent executions. While gesticulating furiously with his hand, the hooded leader appears to deliver a speech. His apparent diatribe ends and the three captors, all carrying play stick rifles, seize their helpless victim.
The ringleader and the girl then pretend to saw off their victim's head.
The New York Daily News reported that the video was found by them on the web site, www.shareeah.org, of radical hook-handed London based Islamic preacher Sheik Abu Hamza al-Masri, jailed last month on terror charges.
However, an exhaustive search by a reporter on Thursday failed to find the video on al-Masri's web site. It was, however, obtained elsewhere and is available here.
The web site, shareeah.org, is apparently run by members of Hamza's Finsbury Park Mosque in London, formerly attended by Zacarias Moussaoui and shoe-bomber Richard Reid. It appears to be administrated out of Utrecht in the Netherlands.
A spokesman did not immediately respond to an e-mail or a message left on voice-mail.
Al-Masri was taken into custody in a predawn raid in London in May on a U.S. warrant, accused of trying to set up jihad camps in Oregon and helping the bombers of the U.S. destroyer Cole.
As CNN pointed out earlier this year, al-Masri is one of the most controversial Muslim figures in Britain. Although he was banned from his Finsbury Park mosque in London's northern suburbs in 2003, he nonetheless continued to preach on the pavement outside.
Police said, CNN reported, that the Finsbury Park mosque premises "have played a role in the recruitment of suspected terrorists and in supporting their activity both here and abroad."
Al-Masri came to prominence in 1999 when five Britons of Pakistani origin were convicted in Yemen, CNN reported. They were sentenced to between three and seven years for plotting to blow up targets in Aden including the British consulate, a church and a hotel.
His teenage son and stepson were among those convicted and prosecutors said he had sent the group to Yemen. Al-Masri denied this, CNN said, and the five insisted they had been tortured into signing confessions.
Al-Masri and his group were also accused of working with Islamic radicals who kidnaped 16 Westerners in December 1998. Four of the Westerners died in a shoot-out during a botched rescue attempt by Yemeni security forces.
After the attacks of 9/11, Al-Masri said the plane hijackers should be hailed as "martyrs" if it emerged they had carried out the attacks in the name of Islam.
CNN reported Al-Masri said, "I won't condone what has happened and I won't condemn it because I don't know who has done it yet. If somebody has done this just for earthly gain and political advancement, then obviously it is a cheap cause. But if it was done because people are desperate and their lives have been threatened, then that is a respectable cause which no one could dare to condemn. Then those people who carried out the attacks would be martyrs. Martyrdom is the highest form of jihad (holy war).
Abu Hamza married a British woman and became a British citizen in 1981.
