FAIR Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting 112 W. 27th Street New York, NY 10001 ACTION ALERT: Fox News Spins 9/11 Commission Report

June 22, 2004

The Bush administration's long-running attempts to link Iraq and Al Qaeda were dealt a serious blow when the September 11 commission's June 16 interim report indicated that there did not appear to be a "collaborative relationship" between Iraq and Osama bin Laden, and that there was no evidence that Iraq was involved in the September 11 attacks.

But if you were watching the Fox News Channel, you saw something very different, as the conservative cable network eagerly defended the Bush administration and criticized the rest of the media for mishandling the story.

On Fox's Special Report newscast (6/16/04), anchor Brit Hume charged that the media were mischaracterizing the report: "The Associated Press leads off its story on a new 9/11 commission report by saying the document bluntly contradicts the Bush administration by claiming to have no credible evidence linking Saddam Hussein to the September 11 terrorist attacks." Hume maintained that the AP story was inaccurate: "In fact, the Bush administration has never said that such evidence exists."

In fact, it's Hume that is misrepresenting the AP story-- quoting from the story's lead, but then changing its meaning through an inaccurate paraphrase. The story actually begins: "Bluntly contradicting the Bush administration...

Truthful media. Journalistic objectivity and ethics. The liberals claim to practice it. I believe it is more accurate to describe what they do in the following terms: Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive, but how vastly we improve our style when we have practiced quite a while.

Well, I guess there is no fairness and accuracy in FAIR, considering that the initial reports have been thoroughly debunked and that Fox has been shown to have been correct.

These people are too busy inhaling their own propaganda to read the newspapers, apparently.

Fox News spins quite often. Linda Vester yesterday used the term "Iraqi terrorists" when she said Kim Sun-Il was beheaded. She's the only one, apparently, who didn't get the memo that they're all insurgents and militants. I was very pleased.

FAIR should apply to be a sub-committee of the U.N. Then their name would work out much more accurately.

Just so the Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting is actually accurate, I have modified some of their copy.
June 16 interim report indicated that there did not appear to be a "collaborative relationship" between Iraq and Osama bin Laden, and that there was no evidence that Iraq was involved in the September 11 attacks.
To be accurate, it should read...
June 16 interim report indicated that there did not appear to be a "collaborative relationship" between Iraq and Osama bin Laden , and that there was no evidence that Iraq was involved in the September 11 attacks.
You see, they (as liberals do) are parsing and separating the words to support their agenda. By inserting, "and that there was not evidence that Iraq was involved", they necessarily give the appearance that the commission made TWO conclusions, when, in fact, they have not.

Further, they allude to the commission's report, not the commission's staff report. Again, the conclusivity of the claim wasn't there. Just more of the "linguistic yoga" leftover the Clinton-era wordsmithing.

It's funny. When you know of and acknowledge the bias, it jumps straight out at you.

What's even funnier is that FAIR is accusing FOX bias by the simple act of calling the lamestream media on it.

Democrat Lee Hamilton on the 9-11 Commission even agreed with Fox on this one. The rest of the media was wrong. Fox proved the only one who could read a few simple sentences.

ROTFL! Riiiight, Fox News got it all wrong.

Except both the Democrat and Republican co Chairman went on Fox and agreed completely with Brit Hume's summation, which I happened to watch live.

The media outted itself in a manner that won't be forgotten any time soon.

As for FAIR.....why not just post the latest talking points from the Kerry Campaign, or DNC headquarters?

I checked out there evidence that Dan Rather is "right-wing" . It consists of them accusing Dan of "maybe" promoting more military assistance to the rebels in Afghanistan in 1989. That's pretty much it. HEY, FAIR, check out "www.ratherbiased.com". They are a joke.

LOL. Yeah, that was a neat trick, huh? I wonder how they pulled that off.

Someone help me out here...I see no difference between the lede saying "Bluntly contradicting...." and Bush saying the AP claims there is a "blunt contradiction" when there really isn't.

Hmm. Hume didn't inaccurately portray the lede, not even in the slightest!

"Except both the Democrat and Republican co Chairman went on Fox and agreed completely with Brit Hume's summation, which I happened to watch live.

LOL. Yeah, that was a neat trick, huh? I wonder how they pulled that off."

And it was obvious BOTH were very upset that the media intentionally misrepresented the findings.

As for myself, I was appalled at the obvious "conspiracy" involving most of the major media outlets except Fox.
